DH and the girls and I drove to NC last summer and this summer. We decided to buy a portable DVD for the ride in case things got hairy, which they did at points in 2006. My DH swore we would never use it again after watching my very vibrant two year old fall into a stupor.
This is exactly why DH doesn't want our kids watching TV when they are so young.
Children acquire much of their language in the very early years. It is when they are most easily molded. I consider myself to use language rather well. It was not higher education that made me literate, rather my literacy that helped in higher education. It took many years of social interaction with people and reading from books, NOT videos and television that gave me the ability to express myself with the written word and articulate my thoughts with the spoken word.
Videos should be supplements and not replacements. Yes, I do show videos in my class, but only AFTER I have already taught a lesson so that kids can make a connection based in a real setting.
For example, one year I read a book about the Titanic in my class for children with special needs. We then watched the movie (fast forwarding through the innappropriate scenes). They were able to show me how and why the Titanic sank and how poorly it had been designed based on what they read. It was amazing to see how things clicked for them, since they cannot obtain and retain information the same way other kids do.
Just because the technology is there, does not mean we need to depend on it. It may take a little work on our parts as parents and future parents, but I think it is worth it.
Just as an aside, Albert Einstein was just named number 5 in the top ten highest earning dead celebrities based on the sale of the videos by Disney. I am sure his estate thinks that is "genius" that a dead guy can make 20 million dollars in one year.
