Help with puppy!!

Hi!

DH and I have a few questions:

Background- we have our puppy almost a week, she is a 12 week old cava poo- she stays in her crate from 7:30-2:30 and does not have an accident.

In the morning, I let her out right away and she does her business number 1 and number two.. I usually feed her right after that.. however, I have noticed that if I leave her while she is eating, she has a number 2 accident on the floor.

Additionally, she had a few number 1 accidents last night- at our friends house (but i think b/c of all the commotion) and another in our den last night.

1. How do we discipline her with accidents?

2. We know she is teething, but we do not know how to discipline her when she bites us- we tell her no, but she doesnt understand that. And we do not want to use the crate as punishment, as it is her home for now until she is finished teething. What do you suggest we do?

3. - she has learned how to climb up the stairs and again does not understand the concept of no - she continuted to climb. Any suggestions?

It has been a long time since dh and I trained a puppy, we appreciate your feedback and suggestions!

Thanks!!!!

Re: Help with puppy!!

1. When you see her having an accident inside, say "NO" very firmly, and take her straight outside. When she does go outside on her own , reward her, praise her, etc and give her a treat when she comes back in. She'll learn soon thereafter.

2. Daisy went thru the same thing - she wanted to chew on our fingers. Get some bitter apple spray and if she tries to teeth on your fingers, spray one spray very gently near her face, below her eyes, and she'll learn to chew on her toys rather than you. As soon as you see her trying to chew on you, grab a toy right away and give it to her to chew on instead, so she knows what is acceptable. Praise her when she does this on her own.

3. As for stairs - get a gate. As much as it is a pain for you, it will make her learn. We have to do this, and when she's being very good, we reward her by putting it down and she stays by us. If that's not an option. pick the dog up and say "NO" very firmly and place her in an area that is confined - not her crate, but maybe a corner in the kitchen for 5-10 min. Daisy now only goes upstairs when she see us going up there, or when we take the vacuum out cause she's scared of it.

Re: Help with puppy!!

1. How do we discipline her with accidents?

Raise your voice and say no.

Take a paper towel. Wipe the mess. Go outside and go with her. Wipe the soiled paper towel to the grassy area you want her to go outside. Then say "good girl". Reward her too when she does business outside. Like it's a huge deal!

2. We know she is teething, but we do not know how to discipline her when she bites us- we tell her no, but she doesnt understand that. And we do not want to use the crate as punishment, as it is her home for now until she is finished teething. What do you suggest we do?

Again. NO very firmly. Mine never did that but you can hold they mouth shut with your hand and say NO. Reprimand EVERY TIME.

And yes, don't use the crate as punishment.

3. - she has learned how to climb up the stairs and again does not understand the concept of no - she continuted to climb. Any suggestions?

Repeating myself. NO. Get her downstair. Show her stairs and say NO. You might want to start the concept of stay.

Re: Help with puppy!!

I have no advice for you other then what the girls suggested. I forgot all about the puppy stage. I'm sure I'll be on here next week asking you girls the same questions.

I hope it gets easier soon! Chat Icon

Our dog always does a #2 right after eating, so we have to let him out right after. The trainer said that eating stimulates him. It might be the same for your dog.

Re: Help with puppy!!

Most puppies usually have to create a bowl movement with 5 minutes of eating. That is what my vet told us

Re: Help with puppy!!

Thanks everyone.

Cindee was a bit better yesterday.

She had an accident at my moms yesterday but I think it was because we didnt take her out right away.

She was great this morning.

And, she was alot better with the biting last night.

Dh even has started to train her to sit..

I think we are going to have to get a gate for the stairs!
