External. They also prick your finger and squeeze blood out. It's about 30 minutes.

Mine was an external sono and took about 10 mins the first time (they couldn't get the baby to move into the right position) and about 15 mins the 2nd time, and then it was about 5 mins or so for the blood work.

Mine was external, but they did tell me if they could not get good enough pics they would have to do internal.
