Spinoff on the deed thread
I am such a bad homeowner, but the deed got sent to the house while we were doing renovations and not living there, and now I can't find it.
If I get a copy from the town is that good enough to apply for STAR or anything else "official" I would need to do?

I think so. I think I remember my lawyer telling me to put the original in a safe and keep a copy handy for stuff like that.

Re: Spinoff on the deed thread
you dont' really need your original deed..the house is in your name and its recorded in the County Clerk's office, but you can get a copy of your deed at the county clerk's and for a fee you can have it certified, but its really not necessary.

Huh. . . I just read the STAR application for Nassau County and they specifically say you need to send them a copy of the deed as well as a copy of your license with new address and two complete cycles of a utility bill.

Re: Spinoff on the deed thread
We used a copy for our STAR application since we didn't have the original by the time we needed to submit the STAR applciation.

Re: Spinoff on the deed thread
I would almost guarantee that most people don't have their original deed. After 10+ years in a house, it's so easy to lose, misplace, damage things, etc. Nobody would be able to do anything if you had to have the original all the time.
As long as the copy is certified by the Town, it is just as good as an original.
