Am I the only one who thinks this is odd?

You all know I've posted about the neighborhood I live in..Chat Icon

Ok..well about a month ago I'm putting the baby down for a nap, and the bell rings. I look outside and it's the little girl from the house next door to us (McRowdy is what I'll call them). DH starts to put his shoes on and she keeps ringing the bell- in total it was 25 times!!! At this point, DD woke up and I was FURIOUS! DH goes down and opens the door and sees her standing there w/a McDonalds Happy Meal Bag and she says "do you have any pennies?" He looks at her and says "no" and she leaves and goes to the next house. Ok. Did you really need to ring our bell like that for this? I thought something was wrong!!

2 weeks ago, the doorbell rings. I go down and it's this girl again. She has a plastic container w/writing on it and says to me "would you like to buy some of my toys for a dollar". In my head I'm thinking you have GOT to be kidding me? I tell her, "no thank you." She then goes on to give me this look like I just murdered her dog! So I close the door. I go upstairs furious, because now this is becoming annoying. She doesn't ring anyone elses bell in the house ..ONLY ours!!! As much as I want to go tell her Mom I won't because that woman can't speak w/out yelling our cursing, and honestly she's just trash. I just decided if she comes again I'm going to let her know (nicely) not to ring our bell anymore unless it's an emergency.

Ok..now am I the only one who finds this odd? I'm all for kids selling candy, yard sales, etc. But to allow or have your child go door to door ALONE when she is only 9 years old and panhandle (because that's what it is) is just unbelievable, dangerous and poor parenting on her mothers part!

What would you do in a situation like this? I feel bad for her, but at the same time, it's frustrating!

I tell you..we have some REAL winners on my block!!! That's why on Halloween I'm putting up a sign that says:

"DO NOT RING BELL - NO CANDY HERE!!"

maybe you could explain to her nicely that you have a small baby in the house who sleeps during the day and the doorbell etc wakes him up. she's young and doesn't know any better. then, if she does it again - i'd try to speak with her parents.

They know..she's stopped me to look at the baby. Do they care? Now that's a different story..Chat Icon They stand in front of our window and whistle for the kid next door to come out, they have YELLING conversations from the front of our house w/the kid from next door who apparently is always in his window.

The solution to this problem is to move..but that's not happening any time soon unfortunately. Till then...I'll just keep Chat Icon

I think it's VERY odd. Who does that? And who lets their kid do that?

Just because she knows you have a baby doesn't mean she knows she shouldn't ring the bell. Next time, just tell her that she is not to ring the bell because it wakes the baby up.

As far as her "panhandling", as long as she's not coming to your door and ringing your bell (which hopefully will be the case after the next time she does it) it won't be your problem anymore.

My cousin suggested this - I think its hysterical:

On Halloween, put out an empty bowl ourside your door with a sign that says 'help yourselves.' Nobody will bother you and it will look like all your candy is gone. Chat Icon

I'd explain it to her the next time she rings your bell.

As for Halloween, I'd not put up that sign (if you were serious). Just don't answer the door or, better yet, leave a plastic pumpkin with candy in it outside your door with a "Please take one" sign.

That is strange...why is this girl always looking for money?
I would tell her not to ring your doorbell anymore because she's disturbing your child. If that doesn't work, you're going to have to talk to her loudmouth mother.

I never said she couldn't ring the bell..but ringing it 25 times..that's ridiculous.

I dunno, she's a child, I'd cut her a little slack. From your description it doesn't sound like her parents are likely to have explained to her what is and isn't socially acceptable. Maybe you can take her under your wing and help her learn some of these things.

But honestly, I wouldn't still be in that apt if so many things were making me unhappy. But that's me.

Does she live in your building? I'd notify the landlord in writing that the child is panhandling in the building and perhaps the LL will take it up with the parents?
