Does anyone have info on aspertame
I was told it's put in a lot of foods and that you want to avoid foods with it. Anyone have any info on it?

Re: Does anyone have info on aspertame
There is really no evidence that using aspartame in your food at a moderate level is bad for you. There apparently was some reaction in mice fed huge amounts of aspartame, but these effects were not seen in humans. Please read up on it yourself, I'm adding a few links below, but my opninion is that while it's better in general to eat as little processed and "unnatural" food as possible, I don't think the amount of aspartame you would ingest normally in your life would ever have any affect on your health.javascript:FEmote(' ');
Here are some links, as you can see the links that I am providing are from government websites or news articles. Please take the source of the info you receive into consideration before making a decision about whether something is dangerous for you.

Also, if you have a question about any particlar chemical, type it into this NIH government database and you can get info about it. NIH Toxnet Database

I had a BIG problem with aspartame!
I had been using equal for about 3 years in my coffee. Over this last spring I developed symtoms of vomiting everyday, severe headaches, blurred vision, muscle cramps and so on. Long story short after seeing my doctor and not being able to diagnose the problem I had heard about the ill effects of aspartame. Did some research and spoke to my doctor. I was told that it is really bad stuff and to stop using it. Within a month I was feeling better and now am back to normal. Stay away from it. Here's a few links to some info.

I have to admit, the second link had a lot of information that sounds very scientific, like the fact that aspartic acid can act as a neurotransmitter and may be excitotoxic in the brain, so I definitely can understand how it could give someone headaches/nausea. However, I could not find the references for that article, I wanted to look a few up to read the original research. Again, I still stand by my recommendation that in general you will get more unbiased info from newspaper articles, basic research articles and government websites, but obviously there are exceptions (I almost included a link to an article until I realized the authors were from nutrasweet). So it's important to inform yourself (and that goes for me, I realize I need to learn more about aspartame before I say it's definitely safe).

Some people, like yourself, have an actual allergy, or reaction, known as Phenylketonuria. That's why you have such severe reactions. It's almost like having a peanut allergy. Peanuts aren't bad for you unless you have an allergy.
As a diabetic, my options are sugar, which could kill me, damage my organs, and cause innumerous health problems, or artificial sweeteners... Until there is a better option, I'm sticking to aspartame and Splenda.

Here's an article from William Campbell Douglass, M.D. Scary what our goverment will do to us.
Article
I can't believe anything he says, however. It's a tainted article. He's hawking his own stuff. It's just a sales pitch using scare tactics.
Even if he's 100% accurate, it can't be believed when he sells the "cure" for everything he just said is bad.
Also.... you can't "get" diabetes from too much sugar.... You would think a medical doctor would know that......

Have you tried stevia? There are even sodas with stevia in them now.

Wikipedia's entry on Stevia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stevia
Stevia has been grown on an experimental basis in Ontario, Canada since 1987 for the purpose of determining the feasibility of growing the crop commercially. In the United States, it is legal to import, grow, sell, and consume stevia products if contained within or labeled for use as a dietary supplement, but not as a food additive. Stevia has also been approved as a dietary supplement in Australia, New Zealand[10] and Canada. In Japan and South American countries, stevia may also be used as a food additive. Stevia is currently banned for use in food in the European Union[11] It is also banned in Singapore and Hong Kong.[12]
The fact that it's actually banned in many countries makes me a little nervous. I'm all for checking out alternatives, however. I've spent the last 22 years trying to find alternatives to sugar....
Do you know what foods in the US use this? I saw that Coca-Cola is working on stuff, but it didn't look like they had any products available yet.

Aspertame gives me the worst headaches possible. I can't eat/drink anything with it in it.

Yes I know that diabetics have to use a sugar substitue. It's not an allergic reaction. It's a normal reaction to poison. Methanol/wood alcohol is a deadly poison.
From what I read, it's not considered an allergy to aspartame, but some sort of sensitivity- either a decreased ability to get rid of the excess amino acids formed when you ingest aspartame, or a higher sensitivity to the excitotoxic effects of aspartic acid on the brain. Also, to be technically correct, phenolketonuria is not an allergy either, it's a deficiency in an enzyme that converts phenylalanine to tyrosine- without this enzyme function, phenylalanine builds up and is converted to a more toxic byproduct which causes damage to the body.
And in regards to methanol being a deadly poison, it's all relative- methanol is produced as a byproduct in many processes in our own body. As my pharmacology professor said, the only difference between a drug and a poison is a dose- anything is dangerous at high enough quantities. Not to say the methanol in aspartame isn't having a toxic effect, but it hasn't been proven that it has- many scientists believe it's at too low a concentration to have an affect, while others believe even at low concentrations methanol or it's byproduct formaldehyde may have toxic effects.
I think Wikipedia gives a good synopsis of the controversy, including many scientific references- I don't have time to read through them all, but from what I gather there is some scientific evidence at least for aspartame to have some side effects. I think limiting aspartame ingestion in children and during pregnancy is probably a good idea, since the evidence says that babies and children may have incompletely formed blood-brain barriers
Thanks for bringing this topic up, I learned a lot today!

The reason why it is banned is b/c the sugar lobby and the chemical lobby don't WANT it used in foods.. then they'd lose money.
