basically, everyone is entitled to it, but you still have to apply for it. I believe you have to be living in your home March of the current school year, in order to be eligible for the next school year, but I can be wrong. Also, there are different deadlines for Nassau and Suffolk.

There are different deadlines for each Town. It's best if you call the assessor's office now to get the application for where your new home is. You'll need your house deed, copy of drivers license with the new home address on it, etc. Keep in mind, some deadlines are Jan 1, Feb 1, (Brookhaven is March 1), so if you aren't closing by then, have the current homeowners apply, so it will be reflected in the taxes for you.
