Yes they can get expensive. We got ours from overstock.com with a mahogany frame and it was $300 and $1.00 shipping

Re: Futons arent that cheap

we got the metal frame type with decorative wood sides. we paid $120 when Kmart was closing. it's not very comfortable if our guests are much more than 100 pounds. so we wound up buying an inflatable mattress. i've heard that the more expensive kinds can be better made (not metal construction under the pad) and have a thicker pad. it may be worth it to spend the extra $ to make sure it will be comfortable.

I bought ours at Walmart - it's a wood frame with side tables, and the matress came with it. It was around $130, I think.

Re: Futons arent that cheap

Have you thought about getting a trundle bed? We were also thinking of getting a futon in the spare room, but decided on a trundle bed instead. We have a twin size with a second twin size on a pop-up medal frame that slides underneath. We were offered a very good deal at Sleepys for the frames and both mattresses, but bought it elsewhere. It is much more comfortable to sleep on than a futon and looks great. I will try to post pics later.

Re: Futons arent that cheap

We have one for overnite drop-ins, yes.

DH actually found a wooden full-sized frame on the street.

I went to futonstogo in Queens and got a new mattress for $99.

We've had one guest so far, and he slept fine.

Re: Futons arent that cheap

I agree.... a trundle is not only less expensive than a futon or sleeper sofa, they're also more comfy....... a win-win situation Chat Icon

currently, we only have space for an aerobed.... Chat Icon someday we'll ramp-up to trundle Chat Icon

Re: Futons arent that cheap

Actually we are selling our futon if you are interested. It was originally over $300 and has a nice wood frame, sturdy construction. Let me know if you are interested.

We are only getting rid of it because we had to turn the den into a nursery.
