Buy a copy of Baby Bargains... it will help you understand all the gear much better.

Some other items I consider essential:
burp clothes
onesies
bouncy chair
swing
portable changing pad
diaper bag
boppy pillow
high chair (if you have space to store for 6 months)
sheets
insert for kitchen sink baths
insert for big bath tub

i would also add the jumperoo and the excersaucer. gymnini.

lots of sheets. changing table covers. burp cloths. bins to organize everything in?

the BEST thing I received and that I have put to the most use is the video monitor. It's amazing. I will now recommed it to everyone!

I never used my boppy. Total waste for me. I think it's b/c I made do with DD #1 before boppies weere invented. I just couldn't get used to the boppy. I know I am the minority.

I had to have:

wipe warmer
pea pod/bumbo chair
snap-n-go stroller

Re: Essentials on your registry....

Don't forgot mattress pads, I only had one for my first and when it was wet we were worried he would ruin the mattress. It was tough with a boy, he peed through almost every diaper for months. Diapers and wipes also, and lots of onesies.

you know what I should have gotten?Actually DD is only 5 months I can still get it now...........

the cloth straps for the infant car seat. They protect the strapes from getting dirty. Pick them up or register for them.

Re: Essentials on your registry....

What I couldnt live without in those first weeks:

1. Boppy - LOVE it.
2. Baby bjorn - DD was in it right away and is still in it all the time at 6 months old.
3. Ultimate Crib Sheet - a lifesaver when pee or spit up (wait til your child eats sweet potatoes and spits up everywhere in the crib) messes up the sleeping. Changing the ultimate crib sheet is SO MUCH EASIER than changing the standard crib sheet.
4. cloth diapers used as burp cloths
5. these super absorbent 'lap pads' that go on the changing table mattress that soak up pee - for those moments when you take off the diaper and DC decides to pee. . . the pads are machine washable and are super absorbent. Brand name is 'especially for baby'
6. those blue baggies (brand name - especially for baby) that smell like baby powder - for putting the poopy diapers in. Really good for when you're changing the baby at grandma's house and you dont want to stink up the place.
7. Diaper champ - works great.

I love the blue baggies. I actually use them instead of the diaper pail. I put the dirty diaper in the blue bags and then put in the blue bags in a shopping bag I and dispose of them outside in the garbage throughout the day. I would rather not keep the dirty diapers in my DS's room.

Re: Essentials on your registry....

I just came back from my shopping at BRU and can think of few things.

1. Extra crib sheets
2. Disposable changing pads. You can take them with you, and change the baby in stroller, or really anywhere and just dispose of the paper. They are in the diaper isle.
3. Lap Pads - these are useful for pretty much anything as they are very absorbant.
4. first aid kit - scisors, brushes, etc.
5. Medical kit - baby tylenol, etc.
6. Bath Essentials - shampoo, conditioner...
7. Breast milk storage - if you are going to pump, and pump cleansers
8. Breast cream - if you are going to breastfeed
9. Burp cloth
10. wash cloth
11 Pack n play and sheet
12. pacifiers
