I didnt read the entire thread- but over the past few days I have read most of it....
I really wasn't going to get involved, however after the day I had- I feel compelled to add.
I really hope I don't get flamed for this, but I'm really upset and need to get this off my chest- please know this is meant so innocently!
I'm the furthest thing from racist. I can honestly say that when meeting someone I never see color.
Ill never forget, in high school I dated a man of color. When I first told my mom of my new found love, I remember her being shocked he was black. I never saw him that way, I never felt the need to mention his racial status. To be honest- I don't think I even realized "he was black". I mean I didn't realize it anymore than I realize the color of someones hair or eyes....
In "my" world, the people I associate myself with, my friends, family, co workers etc, race is never a topic, never a discussion- its just not.
Sadly, I know it still exists today, but we have come a long way from slavery.
It kills me, that such topics such as "the billboard" debate even go on. Whats even more sad is that IMO everything Mommy2bella said in her OP was true.
It kills me that things that are done innocently, things that have NO RACIAL tone whatsoever is sometimes turned into a "black vs. white" debate.
It kills me that today someone of color judged ME for the simple fact that I'm a blonde, Christian white girl. Something that had absolutely NOTHING to do with anyones skin color, something that would've never involved race, was turned into something BEYOND ridiculous. I'm still picking my jaw up off the ground.
Why is it that I'm paying for what my ancestors did to your ancestors??? I didn't do anything to you, so why am I being held responsible for something that happened years and years ago?
IMO- In our lives, we are all judged. White, black, blue, green or purple- we all have prejudices against us. I'm sure there are people who "judge" me because I had a baby at 21. I'm sure people judge my DH because he is 300lbs. Lets face it in todays world, someone is always being judged for something. People of color are not the only ones dealing with prejudices.
If I could erase history I would, but since I cant I can only hope that we stop ALL prejudices. I myself have never ever said a racial slur, I don't think I have ever even heard a racial joke- so I really don't think its fair that I would have to pay for the sins of people I don't even know.
Racism is never going to go away, if every time something happens we assume its because of out ethnicity.
I hope and pray at some point in our lives we all can stop seeing other people for their outside appearances.
It hurts just as much when you are on the other side of the fence

The thing is, its not your just ancestors and it didn't just happen years ago.
It still happens. Heck, it happened yesterday when an 18 year old was beaten up inSI and called the "N" word, and nooses were hung around the town of hempstead.

No- Im aware that happens- but these things happen to people of all races/ethnicities....
I have sympathy- Trust me I do- I wish I could undo it, however that doesn't mean that people of color have the right to mistreat every white person. It dosent give them the right to turn innocent issues into racial ones, to accuse genuinely good white people of being racists..

Of course not. But it happens on both sides of the fence. Anyone who mistreats "ever" of any kind of person is wrong. Some people just have no respsect for others- and that transcends all racial, religious, gender and ages.

I totally agree with this. 100% I think people like Al Sharpton are responsible for turning every issue into a race issue. Look at what happened in Crown Heights in the 1991. A terrible tragic car accident turned into a battle between blacks and Jews.

While I think we all should judge a person by who they are and not by the color of the skin, I do think being "colorblind" can also be dangerous. We must acknowledge a person's race/ethnicity/religious background/etc. so that we can fully understand a person's worldview
and experiences. Having a greater understanding of people and their histories (personal and across generations) will help us all to become more tolerant, more understanding, and more accepting of every person as a human. I think if our society made a greater effort to show all aspects of all types of people and talk about differences in a more candid and open way, some of the sterotypes would dissolve and people would be less biased. But sometimes by denying that there is a race issue and stating "we are all just human", denies the fact that those who are not the majority have had unique experiences (whether it be different cultural values, a personal history of discrimination, or a historical legacy of oppression...etc.) that make them who they are.
I don't know if that makes sense. It's sort of hard to put in words...
