Help - Hardwood Floor Finish Advise
About 2 months ago at this point, we had our hardwood floors done. They are red oak, we stained then and put a satin finish on them. Well they looked great when they were first done. Of course there has been a lot of work going on in the house and there is dust from sanding everywhere. The floors are covered, but dirt did get under. Well yesterday I had to take up the paper in the kitchen, it was so dirty and dull. I had to wash it three times. But now we aren't sure if we really like are satin finish.
So why did you decide on satin or glossy? Can you give me good and bad reasons to pick one or the other.
If we were to make them glossy we have to do that now before we move in. TIA!

We have satin finish. I don't like super shiny floors. But its a personal preference.

We didn't think we like shiny floors either, but now it's hard to decide. What do you clean your floors with?

Orange Glo.
Also I believe Murphys Oil makes a hardwood floor cleaner.
We also did the Satin finish. We choose that since DH tells me how the areas that have more traffic loose the luster and its two toned from the other areas.
I do like the high gloss but understand his reasoning. The floor guy agreed.

I will have to check out Orange Glo & Murphys Oil. Thanks!
That is a good reason for choicing the satin finish. I hadn't thought about that. Thanks!

Re: Help - Hardwood Floor Finish Advise
I like satin, but we got glossy since that's how the downstairs floors (which we didn't refinish) were done, so we wanted things to match, more or less.
Even the glossy isn't as shiny as when we first moved in though. I really need to clean them. Some people told me don't use Murphy's Oil (not sure why), others love it. I have heard white vinegar works well, though I haven't tried it yet.

I use a minwax floor cleaner right now - its in a blue bottle I bought at HD. When its used up I am going to switch to the method cleaner though, I am trying to use all "green" cleaning products in my home. Their granite, window and wood cleaners work great.

Thanks Lauren! Maybe I will try minwax or Method's products. I'm interested in the granite cleaner too. Thanks!

Re: Help - Hardwood Floor Finish Advise
We chose semi gloss because I wanted it to wear better and have a light shine. we have all dark floors- jacobean, so I wanted a little shine to brighten them up. It looks beautiful. I originally wanted satin, but changed my mind last minute, and glad I did.
