What would you do??

Well I need some opinions. Today was certainly eye opening at the RE and we are now re-considering our options. We are dealing with male factor- low morph, low motility, and the count has been on the low side of normal, but today it was terrible (8 mill pre, 400k post). I had figured we would do a few cycles of IUI, but now with these numbers I dont see the point. We are paying out of pocket so this unmedicated cycle alone will cost $700 (back to back IUI). The RE said if this cycle fails she would suggest I go on meds so thats another added cost. I told DH I think I just want to save up and do IVF in Jan rather then wasting $$ on IUI's that have such a slim chance of working. Is this crazy? Should we try more IUI's? I'm making myself sick just thinking about all of thisChat Icon We are lucky in that we can finance this and although it will be uncomfortable, it is feasible. However, I don't want to spend 5-10k on failed IUI's before moving on. I just wish there was an easy button for all of thisChat Icon

Re: What would you do??

I would go the IVF route first! I had to do 4 IUIs before IVF (Insurance mandate) and the failure of those IUIs was devistating.

I wish you luck on your journey! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: What would you do??

That is the standard protocol for RSNY and I held off saying anything after your initial visit - but they should have tested DH and also they should be doing further testing on you before jumping into IUI.
The tough thing about that place is that they are very gung-ho about what they are going to do and it's easy to get caught up in it. Especially cuz they make it seem as though it's going to be a breeze. Which, if you have no major issues it is.

If I were you, I would see a urologist and maybe see another RE for a second opinion.

Most likely I would wait and do the IVF in the long run...you have a much higher chance of success with IVF.

Good luck with your decision.

Thanks for your honestyChat Icon

We have had 2 sets of s/a done and the numbers have been so/so. I have already had day 3 & 21 testing done as well as the HSG so our problem is pretty straightfoward. DH did go to the urologist who put him on antibiotics (which did nothing) and he will go back tomorow to see if they can do anything else. I did ask San Roman if he really thought IUI would be the best fix for our issue and he said he felt that it would be since you are delivering the sperm so close to the egg. I dunno, he didn't push us to do anything this cycle- just said if we wanted to start we could since we already had all the baseline tests. We'll look into getting another opinion and I'll see what they have to say tomorrow. Thanks again.

Re: What would you do??

I would go straight to ivf. We also dealt with male infertility issues. After hearing the success rates of iui, we opted to save our money and go for ivf.

Re: What would you do??

I would save the money for IVF. We also had male factor and since IUI's were covered we did them with no success. We took some time off from TTC and my husband got a new job and we got IVF coverage through his insurance. We were successful with our first round of IVF (I went to RSNY).

Before we got IVF coverage we started saving money to do IVF. After several failed IUI's we knew that IVF would be our only chance (DH's counts were around 1 mil). If we had to pay for the IUI's out of pocket, we would have just went straight for IVF.

Good luck in your decision.

Re: What would you do??

We have MF issues also and were advised against IUI. We went straight to IVF/ICSI. Each IUI is physically and emotionally draining and if the chances are slim I would save my $$ and go straight to IVF. Re: What would you do??

Thanks so much for all your thoughtsChat Icon

We had the second IUI today and the count was better, 6 million post wash. However the motility was only 21% with foward progression of 1. So we are going to go to the IVF orientation next month if this fails. We saw Dr. Cain today and she was very nice and also felt IVF would be a good choice for us. But I'm happy we were able to make a decision and I feel good about it. I guess I have to meet with San Roman again?? How does this usually go (when you move from IUI to IVF??)

Re: What would you do??

If I were you. I would save my $$ and do IVF, my dr would've suggested ICSI with such low numbers. 21% motility is definately ICSI. I have read over the months that RS of NY wasted many fellow posters time and I don't want to be blunt but it sounds like they are doing the same to you. I googled info on sperm count and IUI and all reports I saw showed if there is less than 5 million total sperm AFTER washing IUI success is extremely limited. If your motility was only 21%, with 6 million then your total motile count was just over 1 million, still pretty low. I remember gerty posting she wasted so much time at rs of ny on iui's only to find out like a year later her tubes were blocked and wasted all that precious time. I would move straight to IVF/ICSI and consider another clinic. Sorry to sound harsh... I really wish you Good Luck!!

You need to make a consult appt with Dr. San Roman. He will provide you with information and forms to fill out. The IVF orientation is very interesting.

Thanks!! I actually called today and spoke to them ans asked what I'm supposed to do next. She had me set-up an appt with San Roman for next week to consult about IVF and then after that I will make the NP consult, the injects class, and the orientation appointments. I will skip the Nov. cycle since we will be away but if all goes well I may be starting in Dec (according to my schedule!!). Of course we are still hoping this IUI will work, but if not now we have a backup plan.
