A Tale of 2 Houses
LOOK OVER THE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE FOLLOWING TWO HOUSES AND SEE IF YOU CAN TELL WHICH BELONGS TO AN ENVIRONMENTALIST.
HOUSE # 1:
A 20-room mansion (not including 8 bathrooms) heated by natural gas. Add on a pool (and a pool house) and a separate guest house all heated by gas. In ONE MONTH ALONE this mansion consumes more energy than the average American household in an ENTIRE YEAR. The average bill for electricity and natural gas runs over $2,400.00 per month. In natural gas alone (which last time we checked was a fossil fuel), this property consumes more than 20 times the national average for an American home. This house is not in a northern or Midwestern "snow belt," either. It's in the South.
HOUSE # 2:
Designed by an architecture professor at a leading national university, This house incorporates every "green" feature current home construction can provide. The house contains only 4,000 square feet (4 bedrooms) and is nestled on arid high prairie in the American southwest. A central closet in the house holds geothermal heat pumps drawing ground water through pipes sunk 300 feet into the ground. The water (usually 67 degrees F.) heats the house in winter and cools it in summer. The system uses no fossil fuels such as oil or natural gas, and it consumes 25% of the electricity required for a conventional heating/cooling system. Rainwater from the roof is collected and funneled into a 25,000 gallon underground cistern. Wastewater from showers, sinks and toilets goes into underground purifying tanks and then into the cistern. The collected water then irrigates the land surrounding the house. Flowers and shrubs native to the area blend the property into the surrounding rural landscape.
So the answer is:
HOUSE # 1 (20 room energy guzzling mansion) is outside of Nashville, Tennessee. It is the abode of that renowned environmentalist and filmmaker) Al Gore.
HOUSE # 2 (model eco-friendly house) is on a ranch near Crawford, Texas. Also known as "the Texas White House," it is the private residence of the President of the United States, George W. Bush.
So whose house is gentler on the environment?

I never believe stories like this at first glance, so I checked Snopes... and it's true...

Re: A Tale of 2 Houses
I believe Gore is making changes to his home in a big way. I heard he has installed solar panels to begin with. I don't know the details, but I don't think he really knew how bad his house was. I think he has "people" that take care of that stuff for him,

I support the whole green cause, but I wouldn't consider being a spokesperson for it until I have made sure I can be a shining example of it!

Re: A Tale of 2 Houses
And then there's always this:
ONLY one week after Live Earth, Al Gore's green credentials slipped while hosting his daughter's wedding in Beverly Hills.
Gore and his guests at the weekend ceremony dined on Chilean sea bass - arguably one of the world's most threatened fish species.
Also known as Patagonian toothfish, the species is under pressure from illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing activities in the Southern Ocean, jeopardising the sustainability of remaining stocks.
The species is currently managed by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Living Marine Resources, the body which introduced a catch and trade documentation scheme as an attempt to tackle illegal poaching of this species.
As we await a response from the US, thousands of endangered seabirds die, while the sustainability of the Patagonian toothfish and the legal fishing industry inches closer to the brink of extinction.
A strong and concerted effort by Governments, the fishing industry, the conservation community and by the public which drives consumer demand, is required to put an end to pirate fishing operations in the Southern Ocean - otherwise the ecological sustainability of the toothfish is at risk.
And Al Gore could choose something else to eat.

the plans to make his home green were in the works way before he was outed. he only made the plans public after the outcry. Sounds funny, but it took almost a year for TN to allow some of the changes to his Meade County residence. The changes are almost complete and even though I don't know everything that has been done to his home(s), he has passed all the "green" inspections to date. Hopefull, he can incite his neighbors to do the same. I think the renos cost as much as his home did.

"Public records reveal that as Gore lectures Americans on excessive consumption, he and his wife Tipper live in two properties: a 10,000-square-foot, 20-room, eight-bathroom home in Nashville, and a 4,000-square-foot home in Arlington, Va. (He also has a third home in Carthage, Tenn.) For someone rallying the planet to pursue a path of extreme personal sacrifice, Gore requires little from himself."
source - and it's almost a year old

Re: A Tale of 2 Houses
so he's not allowed to have more than one home?
I'm sure the other homes are being brought up to snuff as well. This hype was mainly about his mansion in TN.
He's doing more than his equally as wealthy neighbors are doing.
Point is he is making us aware of the problem and taking steps to help educate the world about it.

all I'm saying is that if you're going to build awareness about the environment, make movies about it, accept the Oscar for it and now win a Nobel Peace prize for your efforts, the very least you can do is practice what you preach!
No need to take this personally. This is my opinion. He’s a hypocrite, pretty much like most celebs and politicians out there. I hate seeing people like that being put on a pedestal and all the while, the “hated” GWB is actually doing more to protect the environment than its spokesperson.
If you don’t see the irony there, can’t help ya

the “hated” GWB is actually doing more to protect the environment than its spokesperson.
In regards ONLY to his homestead. The negative impact GWB has had on the environment with cutting EPA funding, drilling in threatened environments, pushing to reduce protection of endangered species, cutting energystar programs, cutting funding for utility rebates for energy efficient measures, etc. far outweigh any negative impact that Gore's home could have on the environment. FAR FAR OUTWEIGHS.

Re: A Tale of 2 Houses
I'm a big supporter of the green movement & I'm glad the al gore got the word out with his book/movie about global warming. Unfortunately he does not practice was he preaches & that does not sit well with me. His entire life has been spent living in more than one home & flying in private planes. Its extremely excessive & wasteful behavior for someone that feels so strongly about preserving our environment. His wife made herself famous for speaking out against music artists & vulgar, drug & alcohol related lyrics because they would make our kids do drugs....looks like only allowing her children to listened to censored music didn't work out so well. Not to mention the incredible irony in their son getting pulled over & arrested for driving his HYBRID over 100mph while high on pot. He needs to get his act together at any cost & start leading by example.

I equate this with GWB pushing for world peace and being it's spokesperson
