im confused about a whistling sound on my computer

an actual whistle...like a person trying to get someones attention..i thought it was an LIF thing, then an AIM thing from my friend, but hes not logged on...is it AOL or something? anyone?! Chat Icon Chat Icon

shut the monitor off and see if the whistleing stops

this happened to me last year and it was my monitor

If it's not the monitor, it could be the cooling fan. They often make whistling type noises as they start to fail. If it is that, you'll need a new power supply. Not expensive or hard to replace, but still complicated for anyone who's never been inside a computer case. Do you still have a warranty?

You can also turn off the computer sound to see if it's a software/adware/virus, or a hardware problem. In the Start->Settings->Control Panel, click on the "Sounds and Audio Devices Properties". Mute everything, and turn off your speakers if they are external. That should eliminate any sounds coming from Windows.
