Need help on a paper
Hi! I'm trying to write a paper for my American Sign Language class and I'm running in circles - can anybody help me?! We're doing a big project on Gallaudet University where the student body overthrew a president b/c she wasn't "Deaf enough" and didn't possess qualities that were essential to be president of a deaf school... Do you think that the students should have the power to overthrow a president? Feel free to discuss

Oh boy, tough one in which I'll probably be no help because I see it one way, then another. I'd say since the students are paying for their education then they should have some say in how things are going or have the ability to raise their concerns if something is detrminental to their education. I'm not sure what they mean by the President not being deaf enough. Can you give me more info?

Re: Need help on a paper
Hm, that is a tough call. There was an incident a few years ago where I work that had students calling for the resignation of our president (he's still in office). I do think the students deserve a voice in major issues, however, I also realize that administrators often need to make decisions that aren't popular and that students may not understand based on the strict privacy laws that impact higher education.
However, based only on what you said in your OP, it seems that there was more of an issue of discrimination involved?

This president didn't learn sign language until she was 23, until than she learned how to talk even though she was deaf... So it's the issue that she isn't a full fledge deaf person, but besides all of that she was provost in prior years and apparently was not very good at all.... I guess this is a very close - knit school so the students are very protective over who runs the school - so it's an issue of discrimination and past experience! Ugh, I keep going back and forth over this paper. I hate "Busy work"

Ok, another question, and I don't know if this is even something you could find out. But, what was the process like when they were in the midst of the hiring process. Were students involved in the process at all?

I don't think that the students should be able to overthrow the president of a university. There is a hiring process that goes along with hiring the president of a university and I am sure the students were part of it. They should accept the person for who he/she is.

ITA. The president reports to the Board of Trustees, whose responsibility is to hire and evaluate the university president. Students are not a part of the evaluation process, and I don't believe they are aware of how exactly (and what factors go into) the president is evaluated.
Students are generally given a chance to be part of the presidential hiring process in the final round of interviews when candidates often respond to campus open forum questions. This is the time for students to voice their opinions.
