Madonna: I'm an 'Ambassador for Judaism'
JERUSALEM (AP) - Madonna toasted the Jewish new year with Israeli President Shimon Peres and declared herself an "ambassador for Judaism," local newspapers reported Sunday.
The singer, who is not Jewish, arrived in Israel Wednesday on the eve of Jewish new year to attend a conference on Kabbalah or Jewish mysticism.
Madonna met Peres at his official Jerusalem residence on Saturday evening and the two exchanged gifts, with Madonna receiving a lavishly bound copy of the Old Testament.
She gave Peres a volume of "The Book of Splendor," the guiding text of Kabbalah, inscribed "To Shimon Peres, the man I admire and love, Madonna," the Yediot Ahronot daily reported.
A Peres aide confirmed the meeting but had no details.
"You don't know how popular the Book of Splendor is among Hollywood actors," Yediot quoted Madonna as telling Peres. "Everyone I meet talks to me only about that. I am an ambassador for Judaism."
Madonna, who was raised a Roman Catholic, has taken the Hebrew name Esther, and has been seen wearing a red thread on her wrist in a Jewish tradition to ward off the evil eye.
But her interest in Kabbalah in recent years has been criticized by Orthodox Jews, who say it is an abomination.
Other celebrities who flew in for the Kabbalah conference included movie star Demi Moore and her husband, actor Ashton Kutcher, Rosie O'Donnell and fashion designer Donna Karan. Madonna came with her film director husband Guy Ritchie.
The Haaretz daily quoted Kutcher as telling a group of Israeli businessmen and entertainers on Saturday that Kabbalah had answered fundamental questions in his life and made him a better actor.
Rabbis who specialize in Kabbalah have criticized the interest by non-Jewish celebrities in the subject.
Jewish tradition holds that Kabbalah is so powerful and complicated that only bonafide students may begin to approach it and then only after age 40. Among the elements of Kabbalah are mystical revelations drawn from holy books by recombination of letters and other signs.
Rabbis were particularly incensed by Madonna's song, "Isaac," about the revered 16th-century Kabbalist rabbi Yitzhak Luria, which featured on her 2005 album, "Confessions on a Dance Floor."
During her visit, Madonna plans to visit sites sacred to Kabbalists. It was not known how long she intends to stay.
Madonna paid her first visit to Israel three years ago on another Kabbalah-centered trip.
"I can't believe that I'm celebrating the new year with you in Israel," Maariv newspaper quoted her as telling Peres on Saturday. "It's a dream come true."
I really think she's missing the whole concept of religion.... 
I guess whatever is popular that day is what she follows....

I agree. I get so angry with all this. SHE IS NOT JEWISH!! How can she be an ambassodor of Judaism. Until she coverts to Judaism, everytime she opens her mouth about Kabbalah and Judaism I just want to cringe.

Until she has lived her life having studied or acquired the knowledge of Judaism in its entirety, Madonna has no right to proclaim herself as an ambassador to Judaism. Go to a Mikveh, have a Bat Mitzvah, plant some trees, tour Auschwitz (which is something I vow to do before I die) and then come talk to me. Shame on you Madonna. You are not an ambassador to my faith. Good thing Yom Kippur is coming up. Someone should be atoning for a handful of sins. I am insulted.

 I'm not Jewish but find her absolutely obnoxious and a total joke. How this woman can call herself an ambassador without being a true member of the faith is beyond me. She needs to go away now, enough already.

Well said. I completely agree. I have actually done all those things on your list (besides study to convert).
As the child and grandchild of Holocaust survivors who fled to Isreal and literally climbed over mountains to get out of Poland and into Israel, I was raised to fully understand what being Jewish means. My grandparents were raised in the shtetls (ghettos) of Poland and Russia. My grandfather was very religious and was being groomed to study Kabbalah when he would have turned 40, had the holocaust never happened. I grew up with my grandparents' friends having numbers on their arms.
I have been to Israel many times including for Israeli Independence Day and Israeli Memorial day (which are a day apart), I have been to concentration camps in Poland, including Auschvitz, i had a bat-mitzva of my own, shared my bat-mitzva with a Russian Jewish girl who was unable to celebrate on her own because of the (then) communist government. I light the Shabbat candles on most shabbat and try to celebrate every holiday in my home.
My husband is Israeli. He grew up in Jerusalem and served in the Isreali army, as did his sisters. His family escaped to Israel from Iraq during the awful things that happened to the Jews there in the 1950's. Iraqi Jews
So I truly get upset when people, like Madonna, claim to have any connection to Judaism when they truly don't. This does not apply to people who have respected the rules of Judasim and studied to convert. But to just pick up a book and think, "this is cool. I'll devote myself to this for a few years", it makes me

The thing is, I do not pretend to be something or someone I am not. I am not Orthodox. I do not observe the Sabbath and I do not keep kosher. However, my faith is my culture and it means something to me. It is not a hobby nor is it something cool to do. Kabbalah is one portion of Judaism that many (if not most) secular Jews have no affiliation. It is not what identifies us as Jews. I pray that someday, I will be able to bring my children to Israel to teach them their history. It is a responsibility of our people to perpetuate our faith that I hold close to my heart. Madonna simply cannot fulfill that obligation. Not just through Kabbalah. She would have to immerse herself in study and commit to convert for her efforts to seem remotely sincere - at least to me anyway.
I love learning about other cutures and partake in other people's religious celebrations as well. But you would never see me proclaim to be an ambassador to Catholicism because I enjoy decorating trees and Easter Eggs. Thats just blatant disrespect.
