For those of you that redid your kitchens....
how many of you went to home depot/lowes to do the floor plans and then look for contracters yourselves to do the jobs? Is this the way to go?
For those that had Home depot do the entire remodel, did you feel it was good quality and/or less expensive?
Not sure how to start the process to remodel our kitchen. Just trying to get some info! Thank you !

Re: For those of you that redid your kitchens....
Try Florence in Hutington They are amazing, ask for Morea He does amazing design work and the cabinets are 10 times better quality than lowes, and they are fully customizable to your kitchen. (631) 499-6200
Also my FIL's are redoing their kitchen and we are redoing our entire house, our contractor is amazing, and Morea from florence comes by and makes sure all the cabinets are installed right, and are in perfect condition, i think hes made at least 4 trips to their house so far!
our contractor's company is American Beauty the owners name is Ray Flarerty 631-875-1450 He has been in business for years and years and has done all my FIL's home renovations, bathrooms, etc
Florence in Huntington was HALF the price for better quality cabinets than lowes and home depot!

Re: For those of you that redid your kitchens....
We are redoing our kitchen this fall. We went to Lowes first (with measurements I took) and they did a floor plan. We also looked around and got an estimate from them. We also had a estimate from Home Depot. If I remember correctly, Home Depot won't give you a floor plan with measurements unless you decide to go with them (or something like that). Then we brought in contractors for an estimate.
The floor plan Lowes did was helpful when we were going to look at and get prices for cabinets, countertops, etc.
We are going with a contractor (not Home Depot and Lowes). Home Depot was the most expensive quote we received .

Re: For those of you that redid your kitchens....
Lowes did ours but only the cabinets. Home depot was more expensive. We did granite countertops-purchased elsewhere.
DH did the rest...Floors-Tiles, backsplash, etc.
For us, it was worth the price and to me so far quality is good. My Dh was going to build them from scratch. It save us more time than money and I love the way they look.
They did our floor plan and he even compared prices and they couldnt be beat.

Re: For those of you that redid your kitchens....
Does Lowes charge you to do the Floor Plan if you don't purchase the cabinets from them? And do they give you the actual floor plan? I wanted to have this done but wasn't sure of the whole process.
We are in the very beginning of the process and not sure where to start other then knowing I need some kindof a floor plan so I know what we are working with!

Re: For those of you that redid your kitchens....
As a former HD kitchen designer, HD install is expensive. Expect to pay up to double the cost of cabinets. HD does not charge for a plan, so I would go and get a plan. They will give you the plans, just ask. If you purchase from Lowes/HD i would look for an outside contractor to install for you. You will definetely save a ton of money.

We were there last weekend and I saw them working on kitchen designs with other people and then guy there said that you have to make an appt., it takes about two hours, but he never mentioned (and I never asked) if there was a fee invloved or if it meant you had to purchase through them so I am really curious if anyone knows bc it is something I would like them to do if I don't have to pay too much (or anything!)

Re: For those of you that redid your kitchens....
We did a layout with DH and we received the floorplan at no cost. It gaves us something to go by and what we could fit in our kitchen. Then we worked with our contractor for the actually cabinets, but not through HD or Lowes, some other place that are contractor uses. GL!

Re: For those of you that redid your kitchens....
My contractor specializes in kitchens. He did my floor plan for me. Obviously he did the floor plan before we hired him and there was no charge for it. I found Home Depot to be very expensive and not the best quality. My contractor on the other hand was GREAT. I'll FM you his details.

Well what we did since have an entire knockdown is we had architect plans, but FH's parents had Morea from Florence come and measure designed a SICK plan, keep in mind that FH's parents went to home depot and lowes and the people were so imcompetent they could not even finish the design.
Also Lowes gave them an estimate of 18k for cabinets wich is absurd! Florence came in at around 8-9k for everything including 6 inch crown mouldings, also their cabinets go up to teh ceiling wich is really nice.
But to answer ur question, You can take a rough measurement yourself and bring it to Florence but they come and do an accurate measurement for you as well

Ikea cabinets are actually rated very well. (I don't have them but have looked into them...and I know a few people who have used them without complaint.)

Re: For those of you that redid your kitchens....
We had quite a few designers come in, measure, and do a floor plan. We tried kitchen masters, hd, consumers, Lakeville (no charge for any). Every time someone came in we got a new idea. Out of the above Consumers and Kitchen Masters were the most expensive as far as cabinets go.
We met with quite a few contractors. We ended up going with a recommendation from a fellow LIFer (who was so kind and helpful BTW) and he starts on Monday actually. He was the one that we felt was honest, reliable, and really just the one that we felt most comfortable with. So far he's been great but obviously I can't really say until he starts!
We pretty much got most of the big materials like windows, french doors, cabinets, etc ourselves. He had recommendations for tile guys, floor guys, granite places and what not and we just met with those people seperately.
Since we are doing our kitchen and dining room it actually took us about 6 months to decide on a design and pick cabinets. One piece of advice is to really research, look at many different places, and be patient. It's an expensive project and you want to make sure you get the most for your money and be happy with your choices.

It just depends what you're looking for. IKEA cabinets are made of particle board, not wood.

Truthfully, as far as designing went, we already knew what we were going to do, so they didn't have much input.
We wound up going with Home Depot for cabinets, and did our tile, granite, etc elsewhere
We found our own people for installation

That's not entirely true - they do have solid wood doors in addition to wood veneer...as well as other materials.

The referral is my FIL (kitchen designer) and his main installer is doing her kitchen.
This was a unique occassion and he DOESN'T release his plans w/o purchasing cabinets through him. They are custom high end cabinets, very well made in the US but yes, they are $$$.
His main installer hasn't installed anything but the cabinets my FIL sells in years. He will not install anything from HD or Lowes because he doesn't like the quality (his words) and most people will blame the contractor/installer when things so wrong with the cabinets down the line.
He is booked until the spring of 08. His son (and partner) just joined the FDNY so they are backlogged.
You have FM.

We did the floorplan with HD and ordered the cabinets there. We had our own contractor do the install though. We also went to Consumers and did a floor plan but the guy really wasnt very creative as far as what I wanted to do.
