Can a person be discharged straight from ICU?
Or do they have to go to a step down room first?
TIA

They have to go to a stepdown first or a regular floor.

I agree. If they were sick enough to be in ICU, they would have to be medically stable enough to go home and that's highly unlikely.

I would think you would have to be cleared and that would mean being on watch in a reg. wing first to make sure you dont have to be put back in ICU...
Best of Luck

Technically they can, and I have seen it before. However, it is very rare. Usually a patient goes to a step down unit 1st for a little extra monitoring before going home.

When I worked in a hospital, I never saw anyone released from Step Down unless they were going to a different facility.

Re: Can a person be discharged straight from ICU?
I work in a hospital and although it is rare, I have seen it, but usually it is because there are no beds available on the regular floor and the patient has demonstrated that he/she is medically stable while in the ICU.

Re: Can a person be discharged straight from ICU?
Yes they can be.....although it's rare, but for some illness/trauma you recover quick and can go right from ICU home......it really depends on what's going on.
