Advice, please!

Since the middle of July we've had a "neighborhood" cat coming around. He's very cute and sweet and the first few times, had no collar. He seemed to just be out of kittenhood, so he's small and looked thin, so we fed him.

After a week or two, he started appearing with a worn out collar. Still seemed hungry but really wanted attention. And he'd be at our house practically all day & night ...

Eventually we put up signs and over the weekend a kid from a few houses down came by to get him (he was on our front porch). A few hours later he was back in our yard while my husband was grilling dinner.

And he's brought him back a few times since then, but the cat just keeps coming back. He was outside all day Tuesday in the rain, sneaking into our garage and sleeping on an old dog bed or inside our Jeep. They have a cat door so he can go home, I guess he just doesn't want to!!

He was crying at my bathroom window this morning at 5:45 when I got in the shower.

I guess we just don't know what to do. The owners obviously don't care about him wandering or NOT coming home. I have no idea if he gets fed other than when we feed him (which we kinda want to stop doing, so maybe he won't come around).

He's also not neutered, so I'm imagining him knocking up females all over the neighborhood and bringing the kittens to our house Chat Icon

BTW, I am highly allergic so we could never keep the cat in our house. As it is I need to change clothes and scrub my hands/arms whenever I hold him or play with him.

I just feel so bad that (a) they don't care about him and (b) we have to try to not care about him to make us less attractive to himChat Icon

"Wrangler" aka Big Balls (really named Skittles) curled up on our porch back on that 50 degree rainy day last month:

PS: He also *LOVES* our dog and follows him around and rubs up against him Chat Icon

Beautiful cat, i just dont understand how people adopt animals and not take care of them. It upsets me so much... My DH always says when we get a house i cant go to the pound b/c ill come home with tons of animals. My heart just poors out for these poor little babies.

Re: Advice, please!

Wow...that's a tough call, since you know who owns him.

The reason he's hanging around your house is cuz he's getting taken care of, but I don't know how you would stop at this point. I know I would feel terrible.

The bigger problem is getting him fixed...the last thing that is needed is more kittens. I don't know if you would be willing to just have him neutered by one of the feral cat programs or talk to the neighbor about it. My guess is that the neighbor isn't going to do it, but if you talk to them before you do it then they might get mad that you had their cat fixed.
You could just do it and play dumb - but that's tough too.

I'm sorry, I wish I had a better answer. I hate it when people don't take responsiblity for their pets.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
