A nibbling puppy
Our 2 month old puppy likes to chew on things. He has toys, but would rather chew on our slippers and rugs. We take them away and tell him "no" or "stop" in a firm voice. Another thing that he likes to do is nibble on our hands and feet. It doesn't hurt, but I know this is a problem. When we tell him to stop he does. But he does it again later. I know consistency is key, but are there any other techniques that you guys can recommend? Do all puppies do this? Thanks

If it really gets to be a problem try spraying him in the face with a water bottle when he chews on things or does soething he is not supposed to. It worked great with my poodle and my pit mix. They dont chew on anythig any more

Re: A nibbling puppy
Have you tried not just saying no when he is chewing on something but also then replacing/giving him something he can chew on with much praise "good dog" etc. This seems to be working for us. I think all puppies go through it.

Re: A nibbling puppy
We did two things when Daisy did this.
1. We said no firmly and gave her a toy to chew on instead.
2. When she wouldn't listen, she would get sprayed with the sour apple spray.
She learned rather quickly after that what was acceptable behavior for chewing.
We even sprayed her leash and she's stopped chewing on that now.

Spray the object with bitter apple and its notoxic, safe on skin and they dont like the taste. I used it on my dog and know he only chews on his toys..

This worked for us also. We would spray it on things that she wanted to chew but weren't for her.

Re: A nibbling puppy
Our trainer uses the command NO BITE! and spray a shot of bitter apple in the mouth. Yes, right in the mouth with the command. We had a nippy puppy at 2-3 months old. Now Jasmine is 4 and life is so much better. GOOD LUCK!!!!

Re: A nibbling puppy
Thanks for the advice guys. I will look into the bitter apple. One thing that I've read and kinda works is saying "ouch!" in a high pitched voice. Even if it doesnt hurt. It feels wierd, but it works for now.

I tried this and it works most of the time. It distracts him from our feet or the rug (temporarily). But I guess we just have to keep doing it and he'll get the point.

Re: A nibbling puppy
There are a lot of different things you can try, but yes, you have to be consistent every time.
Anytime the puppy is chewing something inappropriate , say no, take it away and replace it with something she is aloowed to chew.
Praise her anytime she is chewing on her own toys , esp. if she initiated the chewing.
Puppy nipping is a stage but you don't want her to continue as an adult. EVERYTIME she nibbles on any part of anyone's body immediatly say "no" and remove all attention from her. Hands behind back, look up , not at her. If possible, even get up and walk away. She has to learn that anytime she bites, all attention is removed from her.
HTH!
