Silly question.. what is an internal?

Hi!

So I am now in my 28th week and am reading about internal exams... what exactly are they and what do they entail exactly? Are they painful? Thanks! :)

An internal is them manually checking your cervix with a gloved hand, same as when you go for your regular six month check-up, just no pap smear. Usually the first is at 36 or 37 weeks.
