My MIL...argh!
So my MIL made a comment to someone that all the names we have chosen are Jewish (DH is Catholic, I'm Jewish). I never thought of them that way. They just tend to be biblical names with Hebrew origin. what do you think? Do you think of Rebecca and Jacob as solely Jewish? she also made a comment about the middle name Ian, which also is Hebrew but also scottish and celtic. I don't want to make a big deal of it if most people do think of it as Jewish but if it can go either way, I want DH to tell her to deal with it since the grandchild is likely going to be Jewish anyway!

Screw her. My MIL made a comment to me about my son being called Noah's Ark at school, so I said to her, well surely no one calls girls named Mary Jesus's mother in schoolyard chants.
Its your baby. Your choice...screw her.

Re: My MIL...argh!
Personally I like Rebecca and Jacob and I am not Jewish at all. I don't think they sound Jewish and your MIL should mind her own business! I actually wanted to use Jacob but my DH pointed out that our dog's name is Jake and it is just a little to close!

Re: My MIL...argh!
I don't think they are solely Jewish either. Also, both names are in the Old Testament, don't Catholics follow the Old Testament as well? Tell her that next time she says something! I love the name Jacob. We would have picked that for a boys name, but DH's grandfather is Jacob (even though they call him Jack) so we couldn't (DH is Jewish).
And I know many Ian's who aren't Jewish. One is actually Mormon.

It's your child, so do what you guys think is best and will like. This is why we have yet to tell anyone the names we picked out!

Does she know this? Will you have more of an issue with that than a name?

Thank for all the responses! DH needs to put a stop to this.
She does know that our child will likely be Jewish and I know she doesn't like, but she has been told to deal. I am sure this will not be the first time she makes a comment.

Re: My MIL...argh!
oh boy!
Definitely try to have your DH talk to her rather than letting it upset you. Maybe phrase it as, this is your grandchild, don't say something you will later regret.

Re: My MIL...argh!
There are names that are assoicated with different religious and ethnic groups. You won't meet many Catholics with names like Rebbecca or Joshua. Likewise, there aren't too many Jewish people with the names like Mathew, Mark, Luke, or John.
My DH is Italian and I am American-Irish. We are both Catholic and we cannot decide on a girl's name. He likes very ethnic traditional Italian names (Eva, Giada, Giana, Arianna, Francesca) and I like Claire, Siobhan, Katherine, Kathleen, etc...It is just what we are familiar with.
Maybe your mil just doesn't want to feel that their heritage is being looked over or favored over yours!
I know that at my shower, my mother gave me a lot of Irish baby stuff and only when I showed the "Pasta & Potatos" onsie, did my mil crack a smile!

Re: My MIL...argh!
imo, rebecca and jacob are biblical (old testament) names that are traditionally jewish, but nowadays are being used by everyone.
i am catholic and dh is jewish and our child will celebrate both religions. we picked names we liked regardless of their origins, but we suspected that we would get similar comments from family. so we aren't telling anyone until the baby is born, at which point it will be too late!
if you both like the names, i would use them no matter what anyone says. it's your baby!

Re: My MIL...argh!
I think they are great, traditional names... beautiful names. Like many others, I say, "It's YOUR decision (with dh, of course)." And I have to add, that I would have been pretty offended by that comment. Religious differences are not an issue between myself and my DH's family.... but ethnicity is. He is 100% Sicilian and I know that if we do not choose an "Italian" name, I will get similar comments. Good luck!

Re: My MIL...argh!
One of my bestfriends is named Rebecca. She is catholic went to catholic school all her life. So, I truly don't think that it matters where the name comes from. If you like it then you should use it.
