RE question

Do we need a referral to make an appointment with an RE? My OB has mentioned it, but now kinda put it on the back burner until DH gets his repeat s/a. I feel like I should make the appointment now in case I won't be able to get one right away when we need it. His repeat s/a will be in Oct so I was thinking of making the appointment for end of Oct. Of course we are hoping we won't need it, but if we do I want to start then.

Re: RE question

With my insurance I didn't need a referral and went with a doctor on the plan that had been recommended. Why doesn't your DH do the repeat S/A with the RE you begin to see? You can get an appointment, speak with the doctor, begin your testing, and have DH do his S/A. Bring your medical records with you for both yourself and DH. I wouldn't put it on the back burner unless you don't think you are ready. If you are ready, go ahead with the appt. and the RE will work with both you and DH. Good luck!

Re: RE question

Referrals depend on your insurance company's policy. My insurance does not require referrals, but my old insurance did.

As far as making an appointment, if you feel you may need to wait for it, then make it. You can always cancel. I made RE appointments with 2 different offices. For one appointment I had to wait two weeks. The other, was one month. I ended up cancelling the second one.

You could always call your OB's office (anonymously or not) and ask them which RE or clinic they refer their patients to, then make an appointment. When and if you need an appointment, you will be ready. Be prepared to have your insurance (as well as your DH's) insurance information and SS #'s ready. They may ask for that info and/or send you paperwork to fill out before. That was pretty much my experience with both RE offices.

Good luck!

Re: RE question

Well DH had to see a urologist because of the initial s/a. There was an infection and only 5% normal morphology so they put him on antibiotics and are hoping it goes back to normal after. So I figured we would have the s/a done at the same place (so the results will be consistent- I have heard it vaires a lot from place to place). Then he has to go back to the urologist, but he is not an infertiltiy urologuist so I'm not sure why?? Anyway, I think I will call and make an appointment. I know the office refers to Reproductive Specialists of NY. Any feedback on them? I know fo 2 success stories from them so I'm hoping thats a good sign!!

Oh and my insurace doesn't cover ANY infertility, DH's does cover IUI I think but I know it's going to be a huge fight to get them to cover anythingChat Icon I'll have to ask him if they need referrals. It's so crazy that our basic problem is male factor yet they will have to go through my insurace firstChat Icon
