My In-Laws are really, really, strange....
I asked my MIL to provide me with an updated address list for the birth announcements. She sends me an email and says, she will only need 25 for the family. MY DH has a large family with close to 25 cousins and such, but she doesn't want to people to think we are asking for gifts! 
Meanwhile, my mother is sending out close to 60 herself and I am from a tiny family! If it were up tp her, she would take out a billboard!
Then I start to mention the Baptism and the party that follows. She says, "OH, I have never been to one like that" We just go out to lunch after the christening. She couldn't beleive that we would invite almost 100 people to the Baptism! Am I insane?

Different families do different things. My family doesn't do things big. My mom said I didn't need a baby shower and my MIL went nuts. I figure I will always upset somebody. Do what you want to do. No need to explain yourself to either side of the family.
