Re: West Hemstead?
My mom lived there for 50 years. The area has gone down since then (depending on the area). North of the turnpike and the dogwood area are beautiful.
They moved recently to Wantagh.

Re: West Hemstead?
I grew up there and my parents still live there, but I probably wouldn't live there now if I moved back to LI. Depending on the area it has gone downhill a bit. I don't know much about the current state of the schools though.

Re: West Hemstead?
I grew up there, but went to Catholic schools. I moved back for a few years before I got married. I would consider living there again, but would probably only buy north of Hempstead Turnpike if I did. The neighborhood has changed but not so much that I would rule it out - it does depend what area you are looking in.

I think the schools are still good and I like the area. I really love near St. Thomas. AKA Cathedral Gardens.

Re: West Hemstead?
My parents live in the Dogwood section of WH (it's really FS with a WH address). It's beautiful there with district 17 (Franklin Square) schools- very good. North of the tpke it is very crowded and the houses are close together (IMO). Near St.Thomas (on Westminster) it is beautiful (Cathedral Gardens)- mostly tudors.

I grew up in Cathedral gardens and went to Catholic schools. My parents still live there. There are many houses in that area which are in WH, but in Hempstead schools.
My cousin lives in WH. Her oldest daughter went to WH schools (she's in college now) and her son is in 3rd grade this year. The elementary schools are pretty good, but the high school could honestly be better. I believe my cousin plans to move before her youngest gets to high school.
