question from lurker
Hi All,
I've been on the TTC board for a couple of months but I have a question that I think some of you could better answer.
How many months did you wait before seeing a fertility specialist? I've been off the pill for 6 months now and really trying (charting, etc) for 4. I have read that at 30 and up you should see a fertility specialist after 6 months, we are 29 and I'm not sure what's next, if anything?

Re: question from lurker
Actually, when you are under 35, the wait is one year. It is usually when you are over 35 that you see an RE after 6 months unless you have been diagnosed with something that your regular GYN is not trained to treat. He may then send you to an RE.

Re: question from lurker
I would not follow any "standards" as mostly, they are put in place by the insurance industry. i would trust my own instinct over any recommendation, If you feel something is not right, follow up on it. good luck

Re: question from lurker
I haven't seen one yet. So far I am just dealing with my ob/gyn. I haven't really been trying because I do not ovulate (I have PCOS). I am going to try for a couple of more months with my ob/gyn and if no success, I am going to an RE. That will be about 6 months with my regular gyn.

ITA! I went directly to an RE about 6 months after and told them we were trying for over a year. I knew something was wrong and wanted to not waste time trying the natural way.

Re: question from lurker
I didn't wait a year. I had been charting and using the CBEFM, so I went to the RE after 8 months. I told them that I had been trying for 8 months and told him everthing we were doing. he told me that I didn't need to wait a year and I should of already conceived by now. good luck

I have been told by one of my specialists, assuming you know what you're doing(can pinpoint O date, etc.) you should be pregnant in 6 mos. If you're not 90% of the time there's a problem

Re: question from lurker
Thanks for posting this question, I'm in the same boat. Off the pill for 6 months and entering our 4th month of really trying. I always get positives on my OPK and I think we are timing our BD'ing perfectly. I'm getting nervous that nothing has happened yet and wondered if an RE would see me in a few months if I'm still not pg.

Re: question from lurker
The "one year" requisite is set by insurance companies IMO. If you go to an RE 99% will want to help you and work with you. If you tell him "we've being trying for a while" and it might be a year I think the RE will submit the proper paperwork for you. I am a huge advocate of NOT waiting (if you can't tell lol) so do whatever you can to get your BFP. Good luck to you.

Re: question from lurker
Wow that's some great advice! Thank you. I'm going to go to the follow up for our physicals at our PCP and then if we come back all healthy and still don't get anywhere on month 7, I will definitely contact the RE. Thanks again everyone.

Re: question from lurker
7 months and I was under 35 but I did that b/c we were charting from day 1 and I had very regular 28 day cycles and I had in the past two pg's where I got PG on the first try.....
Glad we did go early , took 2 + yrs to get PG through IVF.
GOOD LUCK TO YOU!

Re: question from lurker
I am usually on the 'other side" (ttc) but lately I've been 'lurking" here too. I've been off pill for 7 months-been ttc ever since. I'm 32 and have been discussing all the strategies I've been using with obgyn (bbt, opk, vitamins, herbs, preseed). She is starting to proceed with "unofficial" testing (I have a pelvic sono this week and dh has an rx for s.a.). She said that before I can be recommended to an r.e. she needs to perform all the tests (such as checking for blocked tubes, etc) so that it reflects there isn't some other problem there. perhaps for insurance purposes I guess-but it makes sense at the same time. In my opinion, after another month or two I'd discuss it with your obgyn and maybe encourage them to be a little more aggressive with helping you to ttc. HTH

This is not true. There is no medical basis for your Dr's statement. if you wanted to go to an RE you have every right. Remember Dr's are a BUSINESS. Of course they don't want you to go to another Dr. Would Dunkin Donuts send you down the street to Krispy Kreme?
If I can give anyone any advice in this IF thing it is be proactive and be your own advocate. It has taken me two years, $20,000, emergency tube removal and a WHOLE lot of proactivity for me to find out what my issue is. Good luck to all.

I 100% agree with melijane....
I suspected a problem after only 2 months of TTC (2 cycles)...my gut told me so...I was right...
We are dealing with MF and without the proper tests and not knowing the problem I would have be wasting precious time.....at least we have a plan and know what to do....
I called my RE office and made an appointment....they did ask how long we have been trying TTC and I simply lied...I said 6-8 months...they said ok and that was it....
Please do not wait!!! go get tested and then know for sure if there is/isn't a problem....
