Travertine Patio...anybody have one?

Just curious if there is anyone with a Travertine patio and their opinions on the material?

I've been reading up on it and it seems to be the best material for this area b/c it's so forgiving in freeze/thaw cycles. Plus it has so many postives: cool underfoot, not slippery, no maintenance and can be dry set.

Also, I was wondering if anybody knows why they're not more common around here? (Price wise, they don't seem out of line with pavers.)Chat Icon

really? I never even heard of travertine outdoors! learn something everyday...

I would presume that it would be a bit more slippery when its wet than pavers (if it has a similar surface to an indoor tile), since pavers have very coarse surfaces.... but marble does hold-up well outdoors, and I can imagine it would look amazingly pretty!

The Colosseum in Rome is made out of Travertine and it's still standing. Chat Icon

Actually, Travertine pavers have a non-slip finish (they're similar to tumbled marble).

Still trying to get more info on Travertine in the LI area.

Surprisingly, our landscape designer has never worked with travertine, so she has no experience or knowledge about it. (We waiting to speak with the guy we're hiring to lay/install the patio. Unfortunately he had surgery, so he's not back at work until Wednesday.)

Im not sure how accurate this is, but my DH&I were trying to get ideas for our patio, we stopped by Nicolock (I think its on sunrise hwy in Amityville?)and I was curious about using Travertine for our patio as well, and the salesperson was steering us against it-saying that it's extremely porous and stains easily-so its not a great material to use for high traffic areas-esp w/small children. You can seal the travertine but it then gets a shiney look-so you lose that "olde world" effect-it gets "cheap" looking when sealed. (these are the salesperson's words) we are looking at flagstone(pos.arizona) and bluestone now...Chat Icon cant decide!

My DH and I have be researching travertine to no end and we've found that most people in these parts (Long Island) don't know much about the stone b/c it's not commonly used mostly related to the expense; the material is $9-12 a sqft and $12-14 for installation per sqft.

What we've learned is that Tarvertine isn't very porous at all (it has an absorbency rate of less than 1%) and it's recommended not to seal it when used outdoors.

We were initially looking at New York Bluestone for our patio, but after I saw and walked on the travertine, I was hooked (as was my husband.)

All Island Mason Supply in Kings Park (180 Townline Road)

They have a small section just outside of the front of their building, but I believe the colors were classic/cream. They didn't have many colors on display, nor were they very friendly when we asked questions. Chat Icon

There's also a place down in Oceanside that we're hoping to check out today:
Oceanville Mason Supply
2499 Long Beach Road
Oceanside, NY 11572

I'll let you know if they have a larger selection on display.

Re: Travertine Patio...anybody have one?

This isn't very helpful, but my parent's have them at their home in Vegas in their front courtyard. I love it and think they look great. Last year they had a bad winter and it actually snowed (a little) and they havent had a problem with them. They have been installed for almost 5 years.

It was clear they really don't want to deal with homeowners there, that they prefer to deal with the contractor.

We just received a sample of the Walnut Travertine paver we're going to be laying:

As much as I love the Gold Travertine, we thought it might be too much and figured the Walnut was pretty neutral option. (So we're putting Gold travertine tiles in our master bath. Chat Icon )

Yeah, we're pretty set on it. Our siding is going to be grey cedar shingles, so I think that will work well with it.

I fell in love with the Sienna Gold at Home Depot Expo. I drag my DH by it every time we're there. We're actually using a couple different colors in the master bath, but the walls & floor will be Gold.

How is the travertine holding up in your house?

Re: Travertine Patio...anybody have one?

its holding up great-no complaints--and originally when we bought the house the floors were white & I was cleaning them constantlyChat Icon
The best thing about the travertine aside from it's beauty, is how FORGIVING it is! because of all the crevases(sp?) and imperfections&rugged-ness, It hides A LOT!! lol
