Just how important is a humidifier?
We registered for one but didn't get it. Her nursery is definitely the driest room in the house, and the warmest, so I assume we will need one in the winter BUT do newborns need them as a rule?

We are definitely going to get one. I'm not as concerned about the change in the room's air, but I think it's a good idea to introduce white noise. It will help them get used to not always having a still quiet sleeping environment, and at the same time block out lots of the other different noises happening throughout the house.

You don't need it for when they little like that but for when they are congested. It really helps them and I would rather have it at home taking up space until you need (hopefully you don't) then sititng on a store shelve and needing to go out and get it at night. Also when you decide to purchase one the cool mist ones are the way to go.

I never had one for my daughter. I don't think its a rule at all.
If you get one, you have to be really good about cleaning it or its just adding mold to the room...

Re: Just how important is a humidifier?
You can't really give medication to a newborn, so when they get sick about the only thing you can do for them is put the humidifier on. We had to do that for DDs and within a few days they were well and never sick again all winter. HTH!

Re: Just how important is a humidifier?
we have a cool mist humidifier for dd and it helped us out a lot..a month or so ago thought she was getting a little cold so we used that a few nights while she slept and she got rid of her runny nose before it led to anything else..i like to think it was the humidifier that helped it

we have electric heat so the air in our place is always so dry, so for us, it is a must-have.

Re: Just how important is a humidifier?
I would say it's very important. I've been to the hospital with my son for RSV, bronchiolitis & croup. Could you do without one? Sure but the last thing you want is to hear your child wheezing in the middle of the night & not have one.
While my son had lung issues, yours may not. They will still get colds & be stuffed up. The humidifier eases the congestion.
I would get one. A warm mist isn't necessary IMO.

Re: Just how important is a humidifier?
I only use it when DS is sick, maybe once a yr. You may or may not need it.

Re: Just how important is a humidifier?
It really depends on where you live. We live in FL, and we have air conditioning running ALL day, likely year round. With airconditioning, it makes the air dry - so its harder to breath and leaves nose dry and when sick - its TERRIBLe.
Honestly, even I use the humidifyer when I am sick - because of the airconditioning.
So, because our air is SO dry, we really need one. If you have humidity naturally through out your house - i.e. you don't always run air conditioning and its not so dry because you can have windows open - than you can easily get away with out one. Though it really does help them when they are sick.

This is why I have never used one. My ped. said that they are a breeding ground for mold and other germs.
