Is this legal????
So I just tried calling BabiesRUs at 1800babyrus...turns out it is 1888babyrus, and 1800 is a hardcore porn phone hotline! That gets explicit before you even realize you have the wrong number!!!!
Is that legal for a 1800 number? Do you think this was someone playing a sick joke, since it clearly spells out babyrus?

I think it's legal. They do this with websites all the time, whitehouse.com is porn, whitehouse.gov is the official one. I've heard that kids who are doing reports get the porn one a lot since it's natural to type .com

Well, perhaps, but I think for hardcore porn on a free 1800 line there should be a disclaimer first...Like, you have reached a sexually explicit hotline. Please be aware that content may be disturbing or whatever, know what I mean? It gets explicit RIGHT AWAY...

Yes, but free speech is regulated.
I believe the FTC or the FCC or something regulates toll free numbers, I'm not sure if the rules concern content though.
And isn't free porn bad business?

Also, it's even harder to enforce with phone numbers. Each number has 3 letters, so babyrus could also spell baby-ruse or cab-9-rust or abc-9-push, etc, etc.

I used to work for an office with an 1-888 number. The 1-800 number was a porn number.
Imagine our clients who dialed the 1-800 instead of 1-888.

If it really bothered them that much, I'd think that the babies r us people would try to buy the other phone number from the porn company- just the way that people buy misspelled domain names to increase their traffic.
