Re: Can someone explain.....
I don't know all the details, but you have to apply for it yourself now that you own the home, it doesn't transfer from old owner. And I believe you wouldn't be getting the break until the 2008-2009 tax year. We have to apply for this also.
Here is the link for their site. http://www.orps.state.ny.us/star/

Re: Can you explain STAR.....
Thank you, I actually just did a search on the boards and found some info also.
I just don't know if you fill out the application now or you have to wait to even fill it out and hand it in?

I believe you should hand it in as soon as possible, but I might be wrong. Call your Town and ask them. GL!

I was told you apply for it right after the closing.

Re: Can you explain STAR.....
STAR is a rebate on school taxes. If you just bought a house, and the previous owners had STAR, it will carry over for the next tax year, but after that you need to apply yourself. So you would have STAR for the 2008 tax year, but need to apply for 2009 and beyond.

Cool! I thought it didn't transfer. Nice! I believe they had STAR, so that is good! Thanks Lauren!

We closed July 16 and handed our application in to our town hall a week or so ago for the 08-09 year

Just to clarify - it will carry over but you have to apply for the next tax year by the deadline (March 1st in most towns)
