My mom said that she's noticed squirrels in the yard beginning to collect stuff for the winter earlier than usual, a sign of a bad winter. How squirrels know, I have no idea. But the Farmer's Almanac is also predicting a bad one, I've heard.

I've read a bunch of stories saying this winter will be bad, think about that week when it rained all week, if that had been snow?? we'd still be shoveling out.. let's hope we don't get hit with one of those storms that get stuck off shore..

I'll believe it when I see it. I think the averages are lower then we think they are so when they are saying double the norm, it may be just like last year not worse, kwim?
And they can predict all they want but there's still a lot of guess work involved. And who is going to complain if we don't get as much snow as they 'predict'?
Actually, now that you mention the squirrel thing...I remember noticing that one year and we had snow twice that winter.

I always hope that the snow predictions are wrong especially if I have to go to work that day.
But I think animals do have that innate sense of what can happen.....perhaps it's their survival instincts.....look at the animals that left to higher ground before the Tsunami happened. I think they are right now looking into that data, tracking the data and getting ready to analyze this information....especially for the elephants that were running to higher ground before the tsunami happened.
Hopefully we won't get a lot of snow this year....

I agree, animals are more intuned with nature/weather etc. That's why I thought it was weird that when I actually noticed squirrells appearing to be busily storing up for winter we ended up with a pretty mild winter.

Maybe those squirrels you noticed were just being gluttons and were not stocking up for the winter but for that day...

I need one good snow storm so I can get a day off of school. Schools close pretty easily down here in the shenandoah valley - so I'll hopefully be able to cash in on the 5 snow days they have built in to the calendar.
