Removing Polyurethane from wood?
We are going to begin painting and working on our new house on Friday. The first thing that we have to do is remove the polyurethane from the wood paneling in the den. How is this done? Image Attachment(s):

Do you have to use some kind of chemical to remove the polyurethane before sanding it or just sand it off?

It comes of with sanding - thats how you get it off a floor, so I would think the paneling is the same way.
ETA: if you don't have a sander, I would recommend buying one... it will take you a very long time to do it by hand.
With the floors, you have to start with a very coarse grain to get the finish off, then use a medium grit, and then a fine grit.

I agree w/ the sanding. But, it's back breaking work. It doesn't look like a tremendous space, would you guys consider replacing the paneling w/ new unfinished wood?

That stinks-- we just want to get it done as quickly as possible. We could replace the wood, but it is $$$$$ to do that. I would rather buy raised panel moulding if I was going to buy new wood. Well, I guess I will just suck it up and sand tomorrow. I will post pics when I am done!

I agree that sanding is the only way however I believe you can do a light scuff and then paint with an oil based primer. That should cover it without having to do all the back breaking work.
I would speak with someone at a paint store (such as Aboff's) and get their recommendation.

You could also take down the paneling and see what is underneath... maybe the drywall is in decent shape, or if its wrecked, you could replace the drywall.
Sanding is going to be a huge job - I think more than a day, especially if you are going to do it by hand, it will take forever.

You have a few options, If you are painting it, there is a product called liquid sandpaper which will allow paint to stick to the poly.
I sugguest you tear down the paneling and repair or re-sheetrock, just my opnion but the cleanest look.
