when is the ealiest you can pump
and give bottle and breast to the baby?
I really want my Dh to be involved with the feeding but I am unsure when I should start pumping.
Do I need to give the baby my breast for a few weeks or can I BF and pump right away?

Re: when is the ealiest you can pump
My LC suggested waiting until breastfeeding was well established (about 4 weeks)...I started pumping at about that time and had no problems...my baby still prefers the breast but will take a bottle without a problem.

I pumped right away to relieve engorgment (DD couldn't latch because I was so engorged). She didn't get a bottel until about 3 weeks old.

I don't plan on BF so this isn't my own experience but my best friend started pumping in the hospital and the nurses all said it was fine. Her son is only 10 days old and is almost exclusively bottle fed (breast milk).

It depends on the person, I think. I was having trouble with my milk supply, so a LC suggested I try pumping sooner to try to build a supply.

Re: when is the ealiest you can pump
Your DH can be VERY involved with you baby even if you breastfeed. Part of my BFing class was centered around the husband/father's role in Bfing success and how important he truly is in the whole process. Burping, changing, bathing, rocking, singing to the baby- all of these things help to bond a parent and child. Pumping is very individual. Some women need to do it- like me. Others cannot really respond to pumping for months. You have to see how you are nursing in the beginning and how your baby responds to everything then make the decision- IMO.

Re: when is the ealiest you can pump
Gracie was in the NICU for 2 days & they gave her formula from a bottle although I had wanted to bfe, yet she wouldn't latch on, so I started pumping right away & giving her the bottle. Once I got home I tried having her latch on & she finally got the hang of it after a week or so. She went right from bottle to breast.
