Cool!
In June I filed an appeal for our real estate taxes - I was nervous because we didn't use a real estate attorney, but instead, I did it myself.
Just found out we won! Our taxes went from $10,500 per year to $8,900.00.
I think I deserve an appreciation gift for my efforts

I said the same thing after I had our taxes reassessed (and knocked down by ~$2k). I'm still waiting for this gift LOL

Re: Cool!
Would you mind sharing with us the process of appealing? DH and I have been thinking about doing this and would love to avoid hiring someone if it isn't too complicated. TIA!

SERIOUSLY! I did spend my lunch break doing a little shopping at Macy's, which, conveniently enough, is in the same building where I work

Hmm, well I live in the philly area so it's probably a different process, but basically there's an appeal form online. I looked at the appraisal that was done when we purchased the home, and it listed our square footage as 2600 sq/ft, whereas the board of assessments lists us at 3200 sq/ft, so the basis for my appeal was that the market value is wrong because the house is 600 sq/ft less than what the county listed us as having.
I had to submit documentation showing what houses in our area would have sold for during the year of the last assessment, with the 2600 square footage. I submitted the documentation and they scheduled a hearing in which I presented my case. The hearing lasted for literally 5 minutes. And that was it!

Re: Cool!
It was basically the same process.
I put together a packet with comps (it helped that I looked at 4 other houses on the block) as well as photos of the comps and my house/property. I had to indicate in a letter why I felt I was being over taxed for a comparable (and in 1 case, smaller) house.
Had to get the packet in to the town by a certain date and received a letter about 3 months later stating that I "won". That was one of the best letters!
