Where to check out in NC
I know this question has been asked before but we just scheduled a last minute trip to NC next week to look around and check out the area. Where are the best places to look ? We are def checking out Cary and the surrounding area but what is everyone's else's faves that are not only good places to live but have good schools etc ?
Is it better to look closer to Charlotte ?
Any info would be much appreciated ! Thanks in advance !

Re: Where to check out in NC
We moved to Charlotte in January 2005, and love it down here. It all depends on what you're looking for. Charlotte was a no-brainer for us since we're in the financial services field. Cary, Raleigh, etc, are also very nice.
In Charlotte there are loads of places to look that are all very different. To name a few that lots relocate to - Dilworth (near uptown Charlotte, very $$$) Ballantyne (South Charlotte), Lake Norman (North of Charlotte), University Area (N. of Charlotte), I also know that someone on here just moved to Indian Trail (Mrs Rivera) which is kind of South east. All great places to start and see qhat you're interested in. My husband and I just moved closer to uptown Charlotte in an area called Plaza Midwood. We love it.
Sorry I couldnt be more help about the triangle area. Let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Where to check out in NC
My friend moved down to Charlotte, but is moving back. She hates it!!! A lot of people love it, so you should check it out. What ever you do, don't go to Newbern. Someone who lives in NC told us to look there, and it was awful. We only lasted one day, and then we left.
It seems like the best places to go are Charlotte and Raleigh (Cary). That seems to be where all the New Yorkers are going.

Re: Where to check out in NC
I live in North Raleigh and LOVE it. Not far from downtown and lots to do with plenty of shopping. We moved here about 1 1/2 years ago.
The entire area is great. Cary is a nice place to check out. There are a lot of Northerners in Cary. In fact, everyone here says Cary stands for Containment Area for Relocated Yankees.
Other areas I would recommend are Wake Forest & Apex. Apex is up and coming and very nice.
Please feel free to FM me if you have any questions. I have never regretted making the move here. I also have a great realtor who works with people who relocate from NY all the time if you want her info.

Re: Where to check out in NC
Thanks everyone for all your responses ! I really appreciate all the info and the honesty. How far is Raleigh from Charlotte ? We are def checking out Cary area and did hear about Apex and that it's nice.
Thanks Suzanne. Maybe I will FM you with some questions when I get back if you don't mind. I am leaving this Thursday. I am hoping to really like the area and hoping that I will need the use of a realtor in the near future !
Also, CaseyGirl, thanks for letting me know some others on the board who are in the NC area.
Will keep everyone posted on my trip. I think I will love it. My husband, maybe not. He is a true NY'er, well, now New Jerseyan.

Re: Where to check out in NC
We went to look and looked in the Charlotte and Rakleigh areas.
We loved Rolesville (north of Raleigh) and in the Charlotte area we liked Concord and the South Carolina area that borders Charlotte. If we didn't biuy our overpriced house 2 years ago in Long Island we would have moved to NC in a heartbeat.

Re: Where to check out in NC
My FSIL and her FH moved down there for their jobs last summer. They moved to Greenville which is right outside Char. We went to visit and thought it was great... very cute, small, great shopping, minutes from Lake Norman... it's a new area so everything is very new and up and coming. They really like it.

Greenville NC is near the coast (about 4 hours from Charlotte)-it is where ECU is located and there is Greenville SC (about 2 hours) but I have never heard of a Greenville near Charlotte?
She is probably talking about Greenville SC. That's the only that I can think of near Charlotte.

This is quite far. About 2 hour drive or so depending what side of Raleigh you come from. Charlotte is all the way by SC and the mountains in the West part of NC.

OMGOSH! I'm such a dummy! Why I thought Greenville is beyond me. It's HUNTERSVILLE! They live in Huntersville!
