Would you live behind the mall?????
My DH and I found a house we are considering that is behind a mall. It has a huge backyard and the mall parking lot is behind large bushes (past the yard) as well as a tall wood fence. From the house you can't tell it's behind the mall, nor do you hear any traffic noise, but I was just wondering what everyone's opinion is regarding a house this close to the mall.

Re: Would you live behind the mall?????
Honestly, that would not be my first choice. I would wonder if people used my yard as a cut through. I would also be a little worried with small children because of the heavy traffic in the area. Hoever, if the home is the right price....it might be a possibility.

Re: Would you live behind the mall?????
Oh what about light - a mall parking lot is usually well lit until all hours. That might bother me if it shined into my bedroom at night.

Re: Would you live behind the mall?????
If I totally loved the house I would consider it but I would be concerned about traffic flow in the area especially during the holidays and other heavy shopping periods.

Re: Would you live behind the mall?????
I think if there is enough distance between you and the mall then it should be fine.
The house we bought is directly across from the Southern State. We were weary when buying it - but did anyway. It was the best decision we made. We LOVE our house, can't hear the Parkway traffic when we are in the backyard (when we have our bedroom windows open it's a little noisy - but thank goodness for central air conditioning.)
Also - we live in a no-outlet block so NO ONE ever comes down our block.
I do think that each case is different though - so you have to look at everything around the house and take it all into consideration.

Re: Would you live behind the mall?????
you can't use the yard as a cut thru. It's in the middle of the block, and that fence it pretty darn sturdy and tall.

I would check out the house during a Saturday afternoon and then evening - when the malls is at its busiest.

I would also look into what times the delivery trucks come in....my apartment in Florida backed on a shopping center with a grocery store and the trucks came in at all hours of the night and they left the trucks running the whole time....I did get used to it after a while though!

Re: Would you live behind the mall?????
It would depend on where it was situated. Is it a thru block that would get a lot of traffic during the busy mall times? Would the lights to the parking lot be a bother? Could the mall be a + such as there are no neighbors behind you and you have a large fence with bushes providing additional privacy? I think you have to weigh the positives with the negatives and really think if you could live with the negatives.

Re: Would you live behind the mall?????
The question is not only would you be willing to live there-- but how does it affect your re-sale value.
I would say-- not good on both counts.

For the right price, and depending on the distance and noise, I would consider it.

Re: Would you live behind the mall?????
I am going to make another suggestion that might sound off the wall, but I would check out the area after a big rain storm. I would be concerned that there is a sufficient amount of drainage in the area right next to a mall with a lot of pavement.
I think, like others have said, it would depend on how large a mall it is. If it was a strip mall, I would consider it. If it were a large mall, I don't think I could handle the heavy traffic, especially around the holidays.

Re: Would you live behind the mall?????
I can already forget it...the owner accepted the bid from someone who is paying almost all cash, and will in turn flip the property (at least that's what RE agent told us)
Thanks everyone for all of your opinions. I will def take all of this into consideration when looking at any other property near or around commercial property.

Re: Would you live behind the mall?????
Depends on the mall. Garden city or melville maybe. But the areas near the massapequa mall tend to be in the paper alot for minor crime type of things. You also have to consider the noise/traffic factors.
oops didnt see the forgetting part, but these are all things to consider. Unless you reallllly love the house, you probably should keep looking anyways.
