Has anyone seen the new Mary Poppins?

DH and I took our neice to see it last weekend. I was so surprised!!! They changed so much about the story from the movie! I realize that they coudn't do all the special effects from the original movie so I was expecting some changes, but still!

In the movie, the mother is an activist and there is a scene where she is hosting a rally or gathering for women's right to vote. In the play she is a former actress that the husband treats like she is unimportant (and he is kind of ashamed of her too) and she is trying to make her way in the upper class but no one wants to come to her parties.

The toys come alive to discipline the children in a scary way. Sorry for the long vent, but I was a huge fan of the movie when I was little and my neice is too, and it's so annoying that they changed so much of it! The way they showed the mom was really what got under my skin. My neice was like "Why is the dad embarrased of his wife?"

Has anyone seen this? Was anyone as surprised as me? Sorry - just had to get that out.

I did notice they changed the story a bit, but I still loved it.
I think the mother being an activist for the women's right to vote really wouldn't be relevant to today's audience, but trying to fit in would be, and thats probably why they did it.
In the movie Mr. Banks was kind of a bumbling idiot who didn't notice anything which they changed too.

ETS: now that I think the role of the mom was more true to the stories by P.L. Travers. Also, there were four Banks children in the books, not two.

Are you talking about a new movie or the play?

yes, it was different from the movie. I LOVED the movie as a kid, but I still enjoyed it. And actually, both the movie and the play are based on the book which was written by P.L. Travers YEARS ago. the play is most like the book.
