What would you do - when you're leaving

DH just put in 2 week's notice today and his boss' reaction was downright nasty "well I hope you don't scr#w your new employer the way you're scr*wing me."

To give some background: DH works 7 days a week for this man and then comes home to paperwork. He never has called in sick and rarely takes a day off. This man has no idea how to run his own business.

Now, DH is thinking about giving the man 2 week's PLUS work for 4 weekends following. I think he's nuts! I'm trying to give him as many reasons possible as to why its nutty. Any opinions? Please take my poll.

Two weeks is more than enough time. Your husband could work 24/7 for this man and he still would think he was getting the short end of the stick. He's pretty ungrateful.

I always give 2 weeks and that's it. That's more than enough time for the supervisor to get things squared away.

When I left my last job I gave them 2 weeks notice. The two weeks were like hell. Trying to guilt me into staying and such. I offered to do some consulting if they needed. Currently they are a bit backed up with things and it is only getting slower over there. Once he leaves I am sure his boss will appreciate all that he does.

2 weeks and leave. It's not like he is going to get something in return if he gives more then the expected 2 weeks. Clearly he is under appreciated anyway, his boss should consider himself lucky your DH is willing to give that much.

2 weeks and be done unless you really really have the time and love your boss and don't want to burn bridges you could give me time, but at that point you are just being extra generous. 2 weeks is the standard.

Just the two weeks. Adjusting to a new situation is always tough and it takes a lot out of you. I doubt he is going to want to be adjusting to his new job and then working for some mean guy for free that doesn't appreciate him on the weekends.

that is the standard notice given at most jobs so he is in no way "screwing them"

2 weeks notice isn't mandatory. You can just leave that same day. It's really a courtesy, so you don't burn any bridges. I would just give the 2 weeks, and leave it at that... possibly leaving earlier if it got too uncomfortable.

"I'm giving my two week notice... starting last month."

I think you got your answer from the poll!!! If I was in this situation there is no way would I give 4 of my weekends to this guy... or would I let my DH!

My last boss was also a complete a$$hole when I gave my 2 weeks notice - basically told me it was unprofessional. He harrassed me so much I almost walked out on the spot. I often think I should have.

Two weeks is standard.......His boss is just manipulating him to give himself more time to find a replacement......I would bet any amount of money that if they find someone to replace him before the two weeks is up they will tell him to get lost....and not feel an ounce of guilt about it...

Based on the boss's reaction, I would do my 2 weeks & get out.

From what I've seen most key executives give 3-4 weeks. We're talking running a mulit-million dollar area with many direct reports. It's more as a courtesy to their direct reports than to the company. No one wants to leave valued employees feeling adrift, nor do they want to burn their bridges with a company.

In my almost 8 years, I've seen one VP give 2 weeks notice. We accepted it immediately & paid for his 2 weeks. He was on the chopping block so he saved us a lot of severance by leaving early.

this is what i have told him. he's nuts! I cut and pasted this entire trail into an email for him so he can see that it's not just me that thinks 2 weeks is enough.

It was his father's brilliant idea to stay longer. DH tends to listen to whatever his father says. Grrr. I'm trying to convince him otherwise.

I think if your DH can start his job right away, than F that guy. He obviously has an unprofessional attitude. What would be the benefit of even staying 2 weeks. If this guy gives him a hard time, I would just leave. In his bosses eyes, even though your DH is doing the right thing, the bridge has been burned.

DEFINATELY DON'T work those weekends!!!

If they were going to fire him, would they give him notice??? 2 weeks is plenty.
