Can someone explain this to me?
All liquids, gels and aerosols must be placed in a single, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag. Gallon size bags or bags that are not zip-top such as fold-over sandwich bags are not allowed. Each traveler can use only one, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag.

I get that the bag has to zip but the rest is greek to me. I am not Betty Crocker or Martha Stewart. How many different sizes do Glad-Loc bags even come in???

I can bring water or juice on the plane as long as it is in the quart size zip bag.

Re: Can someone explain this to me?
I just looked at the TSA site and now its allowed as long as it is in a bag. Lighters are allowed now, too but not lighter fluid.

Oh, okay. You can buy the water once you get past security though.
and you are only allowed to bring a max of 3 oz. per container.

Right, so the water or juice would have to be in a 3oz bottle??

3oz is the max size for liquids or gels and they all must fit in a quart size bag. Unless you buy a bottle of water or juice after going through security - then you can bring it on the plane no matter how big it is.

Re: Can someone explain this to me?
Are you flying out of JFK?
Not for nothing but they are SO inconsistent with how they enforce this. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't, depends who you get, what line you are on, I guess.
I went through with a giant sippy cup FULL of water in my carry on (that I forgot about) and they didn't bat an eye. YET, the sippy cup in my son's hands with less than one drop of water in it was ripped from his hands, sending him into a screaming fit, just to go through the magnetometers. Go figure. Not to mention the tons of diaper cream, antibiotic cream, children's motrin, etc in my bag - definitely not packed in the required way.
On the way back, I was pulled off the line and thoroughly searched at Tampa airport because of the same diaper creams, medicines, (and even a juice box!) etc. I did not mind because they did it nicely, and simply had a supervisor double check the items and sent us on our way.
JFK security likes to ACT like they are tough, but they are so inconsistent and not thorough at all compared to other airports. They like to have people scream at you on line and be rude so that you think they are strict but they are really lax in a scary way. At least, that's been my experience this year and last. And I've flown alot in the past two years.
My advice, don't bring anything in your carry on that you don't absolutely need. Buy it there if you can. If you do bring it, be prepared to have it taken away (worst case scenario).

Yep. I saw lots of people throwing away their beverages at security since this regulation was put in place. They make exceptions for things small children & babies need.

Re: Can someone explain this to me?
Okay, you were correct and the TSA site is confusing. I can by water once I clear security at JFK, then I can bring water on the plane. My lip gloss, lotion, yada yada still has to be 3 oz or less in a sandwich ziploc.
I just don't understand why I can bring a bic lighter but not water from home...oh well, such is life.
TYVM ladies for helping solve this.

Yeah, it's a REAL pain. I kept my lipgloss in my purse. I never thought to put it in that ziplock and never had a problem.
They sell actual travel bags now at the drug stores and all you have to do is fill the bottles with your lotion, shampoo, condiitoner. it makes it easy.
Good luck!

Re: Can someone explain this to me?
we are talking about carry-ons only , right?
so if I put shampoo, perfume etc in a ziplock in my checked luggage, it should be fine?...unless of course it opens all over the place

Yep, carry-ons. I believe that you only have to use the 3 oz./ziplock method if you have it on you (carry-on). if you are checking in your luggage, then pack and bring what you want =O)
