for those that own a home...

How long do you plan on being in your house for?

Has anyone thought about buying a second home?

DH and I are trying to figure out if we should invest some money into the house (redoing the kitchen, etc...) or move in a few years - or maybe buy a second home if the prices start coming down over the next few years...it's confusing. We have three bedrooms and I swear at times I think we are growing out of the house already - especially now that the baby is here and has taken over.

I am not sure. We've only been in our house for a few months. The bathrooms and kitchen need updating and there's no dining room, which I would like to add. The house is a nice size- 3 BR, living room, EIK, den and the rooms are big.

I would ultimately like to move to a house that has more land and is a little more secluded. But that wouldn't be for ten years or so. And I suppose a lot depends on what happens with our incomes and the market.

The other plan (or dream, really) is to build a log cabin or buy one further upstate, maybe in Finger Lakes region, for a weekend/summer home.

We are def moving - the 5yr plan- down south but we are still redoing everything over in this house- I feel that while I AM living in it- I want it to be the way I want to live in- you will get most of what you put into the house when you sell it anyway. Plus I want everything NEW, incase we decide to keep this house and buy another against it and use this as an asset for the kids someday.

We bought our house 2 years ago. We put a lot of work into it, redid everything inside and out , but want to sell prob within a year.

While we have plenty of room here and could stay for awhile, there are a few reasons we want to sell. First, this house is a split, I really want a colonial. Second, we can make a big profit, so why not take advantage. And last, this house is just missing certain things we both want in a house.

We just bought our first house together. DH bought this house in 1998. Our new house is our dream house... not yet... needs a lot of work, it's a colonial in East Northport.

We are not planning on moving for A LONG TIME... actually I'm hoping that the next time I move... I'm the one in the boxChat Icon

DH bought the house we live in 9 years ago. It is a 2 family on Staten Island. When we moved home from Ireland in May, we decided to live in it for at least 2 years. Now that I am a SAHM it will probably be more like 4. We renovated the entire first floor, it was so 70's and needed major modernization. It is small, 3 brs and I feel its too small with a baby. However, we will always keep this house as a rental.

Re: for those that own a home...

First of all-- where are the damn baby pictures??!!!

Second of all-- on our new place-- we bought it with the intention of moving in 5 years- and got the mortgage accordingly. We bought in an urban area-- and the plan is to move to house when we are more "ready"-- so, our sitches are not completely the same.

We have made some updates to the apt-- granite counter top, we'll be adding in a travertine backsplash- as well as doing some cosmetic updates to the bathroom and installing a built-in..

All in all-- we are putting about 10 to 12K into this place-- But, it is all mainly things that will improve re-sale value-- so think of any improvements you guys would made, you would reap a ROI- but, if it also helps you to enjoy your home more-- I think it is totally worth it- as long as you don't go overvboard.

Think of where you'll be in 5 yrs, then in 10.. Also- with babies-- if you move- you;d rather do it when they are young and not in school, etc.

Re: for those that own a home...

We don't plan on moving for a LONG time, being that we had our house built. Before that, we bought a condo with the intention on moving out after 4-5 years. We moved out after 3.

I've been toying with the idea of buying a second house as a rental. I'm thinking about buying a condo either up North (by the ski slopes) or down south in Florida (by Disney).

Re: for those that own a home...

We definately are re-doing it. We bought the house for a very good price and we are doing most of the work ourselves. I know we are going to expand it, right now its only 2 small bedrooms but once we have a baby its only a matter of time before we have no room. Also, I want to sell it within 5-6 years so any of the money we put in we will definately get out of it, even if the prices come down.

Yeah, school is a huge consideration - part of why we are thinking about this. We haven't even been here for two years, we have fixed up so much but now we are up to the kitchen and a few other pretty expensive things so it has made us think twice since we can live with it for 3-4years if we have to...so much to think about.
