Re: what can i plant now?
Hmmmm, I can't think of much except Impatiens. They last in the heat, and they live for awhile when it gets colder. I'm not so familiar with ornamental grasses and the like, but that may be an option for now.
When the weather starts to cool in September, you could plant chrysanthemums or pansies, but it's too hot for them right now.

Re: what can i plant now?
actually, in august, the only plants you usually can buy are perennials... it's too late for spring/summer annuals (pansies / impatiens-unless they're in hanging baskets)
why not start your permanent planting now? For full sun, you could plant daisies / blackeyed susans, day lilies, cone flowers..... (these are all 2.5 feet tall/blooming now....) A pretty blooming vine is a clematis. you could also plant some yukkas, which keep their leaves over winter, and provide a little spiky contrast to soft flowers.
for a giant blooming bush, you could plant a rose of sharon (just be aware that they produce babies like crazy, so it's best to keep them in a boarder close to a walkway / driveway, vs lawn, where the babies will invade)
For partial sun, you could plant peonies (bloom in june, but sooo pretty!), iris, hostas.... I love the hostas with the giant leaves
Alternatively, if you want to wait for perennial flowers, just wait until the end of august / beginning of sept, and the fall annuals will apear....
good luck!

i agree
only that you can still buy annuals except at this point they don't looks so good in their pots b/c they have spent too much time in it and is overgrown. but after you plant them they spruce up right away!
and just want to add if you plant perrenials now or even later in the season when they go on sale it is not too late. they will more than likely survive the winter. i buy plants on sale every year in september on and have had only one plant in years that didn't make the winter. it seems it got heaved out of the ground b/c it didn't have enough time to set root.
