95 degrees out and my CAC just crapped out
It's blowing hot air right now. UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It never ends, does it?!
We're currently pricing wood pellet stoves and such for the winter (we have electric heat...no gas lines here) and now we're going to have to replace the CAC as well, I just know it.

electric heat? yikes.... we're searching multiple listings and see a lot of that in the sound beach area.... it sounds really ..... our electric hot water heater is pretty $$$ already...
if you intend to stay several more years, what about investing in some solar panels? it would provide close to all the electric for the heat and air conditioning.... even on many winter days.... and you'd get a big tax credit....
in the long haul, it probably would be less expensive...

It is ridiculously $$$$$. We paid about $800 per month for electric last winter. YIKES. We're still digging out of that hole.
We just moved here in December 2006. We plan on staying in this house forever...we bought knowing we'd have to do something to upgrade the heat. What else can you tell me about Solar Panels??

not too much, since I'm not a home owner... all my experience has been fixing up mom's home over the years... alas, she has no solar.... HOWEVER, I was introduced to the SWEET world of energy efficiency and tax credits when I bought my prius.... and we'll totally green-up our home when we get it.... it's VERY cost effective. Initially you have to pay $$$, but after taxes, and once you pay much less in bills, it definitely works in your favor!
LIPA has this info online: lipa's solar info
hopefully, there are links to different solar power co's on LI at that site...
my fantasty: LIPA cutting a monthly CHECK for me, becuase of panels mmmm, I dream...

well, I'm sure there are similar incentives for you.... there's a pretty big federal tax credit incentive... just look into it... it wil likely cost a lot, but you'll recoup a bundle fairly quickly with the local, state, and federal incentives
good luck with your AC!!!!

How old is the AC unit? I would get another opinion. AC's don't crap out often to the extent a new one is required. The AC in our home is over 15yrs old and still crankin.

It's only 14 years old. I guess the previous owners never had it serviced aka cleaned EVER. What happened was that our AC guy came over last month and added some freon (or whatever it's called nowadays), but since it worked after adding it, he never bothered to take things apart and inspect it. It turns out that the unit was SO flithy that it overheated and the motor burnt out. He's 99% sure we need a new unit but I am definitely getting another opinion, thanks!

Hi Christy! I think we heard about $4000? I honestly have no clue, I just know that we needed this like we need a hole in the head right now.

Re: 95 degrees out and my CAC just crapped out
$4k
oh I'm so sorry! That's awful... I hope you can get an 'end of summer clearance' deal, or something along those lines....
if there's a remote chance the heat will break soon, or you can borrow a window airconditioner from someone for a couple weeks, maybe you should wait a week or 2 before getting it replaced, and search for one of those deals?

Re: 95 degrees out and my CAC just crapped out
We actually have FOUR really good window a/c units from our old house, unfortunately we are lending them to people right now and will have to ask for them back. (it's not like they can't afford to buy 'em). So I think we might even wait until next spring (March or April) but we may book the appointment NOW just in case.

that stinks! but at least it will be good to go for the next 20 years! you do have a large house so urs might be more on the expensive side...i heard ours might be like 2500-3k is there any way that you can buy it then have ur fil install it? he's handy liek that.. that woudl save on installation cost

Re: 95 degrees out and my CAC just crapped out
I'm in CT too and we just had our CAC installed. I don't even want to tell you what we paid. However since we installed energy efficient units, we got back $600 from CL&P. We also got back $1,800 from Carrier. We needed everything since our home never had CAC.
Where in CT are you? I'm by Danbury. My guy was pretty fair and reasonably priced.

I'm in central CT. :) That's awesome that you got back some money! Luckily we only need a new unit, not a whole new system, so I am hoping it doesn't cost too much.

We had a problem last year and we called our oil company (Slomins) to come take a look. The unit started blowing warm air and eventually stopped working all together. They told us the fan motor might be bad and/or the condenser may be shot. Both the fan motor and condenser sit outside. Slomins quoted us $1600 to replace the fan motor and could not guarantee how long the motor would last, if this was the problem. We decided to call a friend who knew a friend in the AC business. He came by and told us he was sure the unit needed to be replaced. Being the handy people that we are, we did our own research on a forum, asked questions and explained the symptoms and was told by multiple people that the fan motor was shot and that we could easily replace the motor ourselves. We purchased the fan motor online for $180 and installed it ourselves. The unit has been working fine since mid last summer. I’m not suggesting you guys tackle this project yourselves but rather I’m making you aware of our situation. When possible always get more than one opinion when it comes to this stuff. Some companies and contractors are only looking to make money.
Sorry for the long story but I felt obligated to share it.

GENIUS! thanks for sharing that....
(if you end up DIY'ing, make triple sure the power is cut off... there's some serious power supply going to CAC's....)
