Tipping for a few things...
1. so, when you go for dinner its common knowledge 15-20% tip is expected....
but what if you had alot of drinky drinks with dinner??? (say the drinks range from $5-10) do you still tip 15-20% on the entire bill? OR do you tip 15-20% on the food portion and then $1 per each drink???
2. when you order a round of drinks at a bar do you tip $1 or $1 per drink?
3. if there is a beer & shot combo deal do you tip $1 or $2??
4. when you get a buy back how much do you leave? $0? $1? $2? more?

Re: Tipping for a few things...
1. - If the liquor and food bill is one and the same, I do 20% of the total.
2. I tip 20% of the total (so if a drink is $10 - I tip $2.
3. same as above
4. Usually double the tip I would've done had I paid.

dinner with alot of drinks..20% at least of the total bill...
round of drinks...3 to5 dollars per round...
drinks with shots..at least 5 dollars..
buybacks...usually do not tip at that time because anytime I have been bought back I have been hanging in the same spot with money on the bar..that being said my rule with buybacks is that when I leave, I leave a pretty generous tip..and that also depends on how many times I have been bought back..so it can vary between 20 to probably the most I left was 50....
i just have to add that I do not go out regularly anymore except to dinner so i am going by what I did years ago...

Re: Tipping for a few things...
1. 15-20% of the total bill- drinks included
2. $1 per drink
3. $2
4. It depends on how much. If its only a few than 2 per drink. If its been a lot, I can leave more than that.

I would tip 18-20% of the check, unless the service was exceptional, then more.
2. when you order a round of drinks at a bar do you tip $1 or $1 per drink?
haven't been to a bar in ages, but I used to tip $1+ per drink
3. if there is a beer & shot combo deal do you tip $1 or $2??
more than $1
4. when you get a buy back how much do you leave? $0? $1? $2? more? $2

I dont ever go to bars but I am curious, are you tipping $1 a drink if its just soda or even a beer. Mixed drinks I get but opening a bottle of beer... thats a $1 tip???

Re: Tipping for a few things...
1. 20% of the total bill
2. Approx $1 per person
3. Probably $1-2 per person - I can't remember the last time I ordered a shot though.
4. Probably $2 per drink on average. We got to one place where we get lots of buy backs and can tip up 30-40% of the check.

so you what would you leave? less then $1?
anyway- I don't know why I would be surprised after 5 years of bartending- some people leave nothing on $100 worth of drinks
my answers
1- 20% is my average- I tip on the drinks and food- I never understood only tipping on the food (but I tip on total-including tax- so I guess I tip more then 20%)
2- $2 per drink or I tip big in the begining then tip $1 the rest of the night
3- drink and shot- $2 at least
4- $5 at least

Re: Tipping for a few things...
We are not big drinkers, but no matter what we always give 15-20 %.

I agree with this, I don't understand why bartenders get $1 (or whatever amount deemed worthy by the patron) to go to a fridge, grab a drink and pop the top off. It just makes no sense to me. It never has made sense to me but I tip anyway as I was raised with good "bar etiquette" Just stupid to me, I don't tip the guy who makes my soda at a fast food place...aren't they pretty much doing the same?

Re: Tipping for a few things...
1. I usually tip more if we are boozing it up. I figure we are probably a little more obnoxious than the average cat, so I want to give the waitress nuisance pay.
2. I rarely go to bars anymore. Last time was in Vegas for my bachelorette party in February. We did the same as when we were younger. A 20 tip on the table and add more after every 3rd round.
3. See above - we also offer to buy the bartender a shot if we are doing them.
4. We always seem to get buy backs.. but I look at it as a 'thank you' for our generosity and patronage. I don't 'thank you' back.. I just continue the same trend of tipping.

I dont know what I would do? I probably would leave a dollar, but I can tell you for sure that if I ordered 3 beers, I would not leave $3.
Sorry to the bartenders out there, but like Deb said I dont see popping open a beer, or filling a glass with soda the same as I do waitresses putting your order together and carrying it from the kitchen to the table. I do see mixing drinks differenlty though.
JMO, but no worries... I dont go to bars so I wont be leaving any bad tips
In repsonse to question 1 I would tip 20% of the bill. It would never even cross my mind to tip on the drinks seperately.
