Tell Me What You Want...Whatcha Really Really Want!
Whenever someone asks me 'What do you want for your birthday?' - I give the same old standby response: "I don't know.. you don't have to get me anything..."
Really - what I mean is more - "If you don't know me well enough, or care enough to pay attention to what I enjoy, then you probably shouldn't feel obligated to buy me a gift." And I know that isn't fair - but there it is.
I was wondering... how do you respond when someone asks you what you want. And if you respond "Nothing.." do you mean it?

I hem and haw and usually wind up getting something like a GC to a spa (which then takes me a year to use) Or some cash.
I wish people in my life would be more creative with Birthday presents. This year my office got me a GC to Space NK...a make up store. I never freaking wear make up!!!

If there was something I really wanted, then I would tell them. But my dad has gotten lazy and has given me money for Christmas. I wish he'd put a LITTLE thought into it.
But there are some people that I HAVE to ask what they want. Like my dad. He doesn't have any hobbies except reading, so I never know what to get him. Plus if he needs something, he'll usually just get it himself. He's very hard to shop for. I don't like to resort to clothes or a gift cert.

Re: Tell Me What You Want...Whatcha Really Really Want!
That's tough - I feel bad about people buying me things, so I may say “nothing”. If it's someone I KNOW will buy me something (like Mom) I always ask for an iTunes or Borders gift card.
If we’re talking about DH’s, Dean will ask if I want anything in particular, because there are times I want a coat or a pair of boots or something, so I might say “Shoes”, and then he’ll pick something that’s exactly my taste. So if we’re talking about your DH maybe he just wants a category, like “Oh, I wouldn’t mind some clothes” or “Well, I’d love us to do something together..” and let him plan it…
I don’t think it’s a matter of them not knowing you, I think it’s “Hey, I can go out and buy you something I know you’ll like, but is there anything in particular you’d LIKE right now…”
