shellfish debate...
DH and I are having a little debate and I thought you ladies could help. I love things like shrimp, clams, mussles, etc. I thought these were okay to eat in moderation while pregnant, but DH thinks not. I"ll ask the doctor when I go next week, but I'm wondering what you ladies would say?

Re: shellfish debate...
My doctor said that shell fish in moderation is ok. I wouldn't eat it everyday but once or twice a week should not be a problem!

Re: shellfish debate...
Well, I've eaten all of the foods you described during this pregnancy. I have read that you just have to make sure they are cooked thoroughly and don't eat them all the time. That "moderation" word is key!

I tell you, it's amazing the discrepancy between one doctor to the next. I have actually read that shellfish are low in mercury. They specifically list certain fish that are hight in mercury to stay away from and no book has ever listed shellfish as high in mercury. I think the reason they say to stay away from shellfish is because of certain bacteria.
Pretty soon they will simply tell us preggos to sustain on water and bread!!! (until they decide that water is no longer good for you!!!)

Shellfish is ok in moderation, like most other things.
And it is not high in mercury.

Re: shellfish debate...
My ob/gyn is also a researcher/professor and said that shellfish is perfectly fine. She said that the problem with most ob/gyns is that they do not up to date on research/studies and that they are so nervous about possible lawsuits that they say no to everything. She said fish is very good for pregnant women and that the fish that women should avoid are fish that most women don't eat on a regular basis anyway

This might help:
http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/mercury/backgrounder.html
According to this, shrimp are fine in moderation. They are relatively low in mercury.
DH bugs me about fish all the time too. I know he means well, but it gets a little annoying sometimes.

That's so funny. Went out to dinner with DH one night and I ordered pasta with clam sauce and he gave my food "stink eye" the whole time. This was after he asked me about 3 times if I should be eating it!

My doc said shellfish is ok in moderation...I actually think shellfish is much safer than other fish, like tuna, etc. I eat shrimp about once a week

I found a great list on americanpregnacy.org that I have used as my "seafood bible" throughout my pregnancy. Hope it helps!

Re: shellfish debate...
I eat shrimp at least once a week - it's a staple for dinner in our house. My only restrictions are no raw meat and no raw fish. Everything else, in moderation, is fine. That said, you have to do what you're comfortable with. Let your DH ask your OB all the questions he needs to reassure him.
