Can I do a load of laundry at the inspection?
After reading what happened to Vanessa (Scarletbegonia), I want to see if I can do a small load of laundry at the inspection.
Is this a really weird request? Have you done this? I'd probably bring crappy towels just to see if they'd dry.

you laugh, but I ran the dishwasher and popped a bag of microwave popcorn during mine (we were bringing our washer and dryer).

I would do it too. We ran everything during our inspection. The dishwasher, water in the microwave, the laundry, everything that we could test we did!!!

I'm totally taking advantage then. I'll bring lunch.
The homeowner won't be there anyway. Hey, if I'm buying everything in the house, I may as well make sure it works, right?
I wonder if I should take a shower too...

Re: Can I do a load of laundry at the inspection?
are you talking about at the engineers inspection? Or the walkthrough before closing?
I did this at the walkthrough. Ran everything including the faucets to see if there were any leaks. Turned on every light, opened every door including the fridge.

Sure. We have a seriously thorough engineer coming. He will open every single door, turn on and check every faucet, shower, appliance, etc.

I didn't know you found a house!!!
First one we looked at.
But after a year of thorough searching on MLS, I know what else is out there in our price range. No other house I've seen compares to this one.
It's not a done deal yet, so I'm trying to keep mum about it. Nothing worse than acting like you own it and then have the deal fall through!
I'm talking about the inspection, not the walk through. We have someone my sister has used 4 times already and while he's doing his thing, I want to continue measuring doorways, trying out appliances, etc.
So lets see... Bring some dishes for the dishwasher, microwave popcorn, some towels for a load of laundry, turn on all the faucets/showers, flush the toilets, turn on the sprinklers, all the lights and ceiling fans, test the alarm system...
I know the inspector will do all this too but I like to see for myself.

Re: Can I do a load of laundry at the inspection?
I would not bring any of those to the inspection. Let your inspector determine the working condition of those appliances. Once you do a walthrough and if those appliances are not working then you have something to say. Bringing your dishes and towels to someone's home to "do" is not acceptable IMO. You can run these appliances without doing that.
Also, by the time you do a walkthrough these appliances will need re-checking. If they are not woking at that point the homeowner will have to fix or replace them or give you money towards that.
eta: If you break something during the inspection you will be responsible. You may want to observe the inspector do these things. They are insured.

I agree with this completely! If you don't trust your engineer enough to do his job, maybe you should get a new engineer. He will turn on every appliance, make sure they are working, estimate how old they are, etc.
I would be right there with him, making sure he runs the appliances long enough for your satisfaction, but I wouldn't touch anything yourself. If something is broken - what's to stop the homeowners from turning around and saying you broke it??
If you are concerned again by the time of the walkthrough, then I would do those things, although at that point your REA is with you - and once again, I would let them touch everything.

Re: Can I do a load of laundry at the inspection?
You can definitely run the washer...my engineer did when he did his inspeciton and he told me to do it at the final walkthrough...guess what? I broke two months later anyway
