out of towners & pregnancy

since we live away from our families, we will have guests during the birth or days following..it's starting to hit me, exactly how many people will be here

my parents (1st granchild)
my brother(s) and sister in law (godparents)
dhs mom & stepdad
dhs dad & stepmom

that's a lot of people and though I'm happy that they're excited to be here, I also nervous. my husband laughed n said that we'll move the dining room table out of the way and buy extra air mattresses...but seriously, w/a newborn - i don't think so.

any suggestions? we have local hotels nearby but i wouldn't want my parents at a hotel b/c its their first grandchild - it's my inlaws 3rd, so i feel like they should have more time...is that wrong of me? i wasn't concerned till he mentioned it tonight

thanks in advance

Re: out of towners & pregnancy

I can't imagine having that many people staying with me after the birth of the baby. Visiting fine, staying no. Neither of our families live around here either.

My mom was determined to stay with us for the first week or two after the baby was born. I said we would love for her to visit, and we'd know we'd need the help, but 24 hours was too much. We want time to bond as a family, just the 3 of us.

You need to think about what's best for your situation. When I posted my dilemma (about my mom insisting to stay with us) on parenting, almost everybody said they didn't have live-in help. If people came to visit they stayed in hotels. They all wanted the help, but not 24 hours per day. Post on parenting and see what they say. There's a new group of mommies with more advice now.

this is JMO, but I would have 1 set of rules for both grandparents - regardless of how many grandchildren they have. If one set goes to a hotel, they should both go. I wouldn't have two standards, it's only going to cause hurt feelings.

I have to agree. We will be moving before the baby comes. I already told my DH I do not want our house turning into a hotel with a newborn.

Re: out of towners & pregnancy

I want my mom here. She's going to stay for a week or so. But everyone else...I'm not so sure about. I think my dad will stay for a day or 2 and then go home. We live about 1 1/2 hours from them.

DH's parents however, I'm not sure what they will do. I definitely do not want them here longer than a few hours. I just don't have that connection with them yet. They actually have an apartment in our house - but they haven't moved in yet and they have no furniture, so anytime they stay here it's in our part of the house...which won't work since my parents will be here.

I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

I went through the same exact thing with my first child. I had to put my foot down and tell people to give us a week in between visits and that we did not want anyone until 2 weeks after the birth of our child. That did not go over well with my IL's, but I am so glad we had the time to ourselves for at least a week (my daughter came earlier than expected). We had weekly/monthly visitors non stop until she turned 2. We still have visitors, butit;s not as frequent as it was. do what you feel is best, hotels are available.

i know that it would be best to do this, but my parents are old school, just off the boat and they're not into hotels - they don't even like to eat at resaturants b/c they want to know what's in their food. in our family we always make/find room for visiting members.

dhs parents grew up in the 60s & 70s so there's a huge difference in what they are comfortable with - often times they stay at hotels when they visit their family members, so i don't think it would be that big - but then again, who knows. they might be offended just the same.

personally, with all that my family has done for my husband and i through the years, i can't in good conscious ask them to fork over even more money to stay at a hotel for an extended amount of time. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

hopefully it will work itself out during the next few mos so that i'm not stressed about it too much.

thanks again for the support!Chat Icon
