Can I get some prayers
For my co-worker...she is 16 weeks pregnant after her first IVF/ICSI. This is her third baby and they just told her that her AFP test came back with some abnormalities. They told her to have an amnio done. She's very nervous and scared.
Did anyone have their AFP test come back abnormal and have a healthy baby?

I have heard about the test showing many abnormalities when none are present. I will pray for her!

The AFP has lots of false positives! Tell her not to worry yet.

I have heard of the test having alot of false positives. I personally know two girls who had results like that, one did not do the amino and the other did. Both had healthy babies.

YES! My triplescreen came back with an increased risk of downs syndrome...I opted to have the quadscreen done for piece of mind and it came back within the normal range...we had the perinatologist specifiically look for the indicators during our Level 2 and saw one indicator that was a bit abnormal...we did not opt for the amnio and my doctor did not even suggest it due to my ultrascreen results which were good (I brought it up!)...My daughter is perfect! Her indicator that was off (the length of her nasal bone) was just related to the fact that she is petite and has a small nose! Good luck to her!

Tell her not to worry to much...
basically about 30% of all AFPs come back abnormal..and only about 1% of that 30% are actually positive for an abnormality...(I may be off a bit on my percentages but you get the idea)

My ultrascreen came back with cause for concern. Given the HIGH rate of false positives with the AFP we skipped it and went straight to amnio. After a brutal two week wait for results - everything is normal.
