Tuna Fish from Subway?

I am craving a tuna sub from Subway. Can I have this? It is the first thing I am wanting besides grilled cheese or mac and cheese for weeks now. I have not had any tuna fish yet (I am 11 weeks). I know certain ones are ok in moderation but I don't know what they are and if it is the kind they use at fast food places.

My doc said tuna is one thing to stay away from (and he didn't tell me to stay away from too many things)

Re: Tuna Fish from Subway?

You are only supposed to eat 4oz or less of tuna a week.

If you are craving it go ahead. Don't eat it everyday...but every once in a while is fine.

Apparently this completely depends on your doctor. I have only 2 forbidden foods - raw fish and raw meat. According to my doctor, anything in moderation (and under the right circumstances - i.e. no street vendor food, etc) is completely fine. I say go and enjoy it.

ETA: he specifically mentioned tuna as being fine.

My dr said the same thing...stay away from raw fish, meat, liquor and cigs...that's about it...everything else in moderation.

Re: Tuna Fish from Subway?

Tuna contains mercury.

The levels in tuna vary depending on the catch.

I remember the mercury levels in tuna being really high one year and everyone was advised to "use caution".

I craved Panaras tuna right around the same time and ate it 2-3 times over the course of a month or so.

I'm sure One sandwich will be just fine, but if you are still concerned and want it make it yourself and use the chunk light not the albacore.

Here are the FDA Guidelines:
"The risks from mercury in fish and shellfish depend on the amount of fish and shellfish eaten and the levels of mercury in the fish and shellfish. Therefore, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are advising women who may become pregnant, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and young children to avoid some types of fish and eat fish and shellfish that are lower in mercury.

By following these 3 recommendations for selecting and eating fish or shellfish, women and young children will receive the benefits of eating fish and shellfish and be confident that they have reduced their exposure to the harmful effects of mercury.

Do not eat Shark, Swordfish, King Mackerel, or Tilefish because they contain high levels of mercury.

Eat up to 12 ounces (2 average meals) a week of a variety of fish and shellfish that are lower in mercury.

********Five of the most commonly eaten fish that are low in mercury are shrimp, canned light tuna, salmon, pollock, and catfish.********

Another commonly eaten fish, albacore ("white") tuna has more mercury than canned light tuna. So, when choosing your two meals of fish and shellfish, you may eat up to 6 ounces (one average meal) of albacore tuna per week.

Check local advisories about the safety of fish caught by family and friends in your local lakes, rivers, and coastal areas. If no advice is available, eat up to 6 ounces (one average meal) per week of fish you catch from local waters, but don't consume any other fish during that week."

My doctor said a small amount of tuna once a week or less is fine, though she did recommend that I avoid the albacore tuna. It has more mercury than the chunk light, which is probably what they use at subway. Albacore is pricier.

I've been eating it once in awhile. Lunch choices are very limited near my work, and bringing is hard.

I think it's probably okay to have it, in moderation.

Re: Tuna Fish from Subway?

I believe you can eat tuna in moderation...like no more than 1x a week at most.
I was craving tuna on a bagel when I was in my first trimester and I had some...let me tell you, I had the WORST headache ever after eating it...that is what has kept me away from eating it the remainder of my pregnancy...

I've had two OB's in my times pregers and both said 4 oz a week is fine. It's the lager fish that they worry about more like catfish - seabass and some fish I've never heard about. Actually a small serving of shrimp is a good source of protein and I would have never thought that but I read it on Pregnancy.com.

Good luck.
