Re: Trac fone-anyone have it?

I think my Grandpa had it, for emergencies. He drives to and from the V.A. for Dr. appts, etc. My Grandma buys the recharge cards at the grocery store.

With Tracfone, each card has a 90 day lifespan, so my Grandpa ended up wasting a lot of minutes. They switched him to a Virgin Mobile pre-paid thing instead. The phone was free, he gets free nights and weekends, and I think they pay $6.99/mo.

Re: Trac fone-anyone have it?

I don't have Tracfone, but I have a Virgin Mobile pre-pay. It works out well for me, because I only really use it when I am travelling, or to call DH for something quick if I am out somewhere.

The way my plan works is that you have to add $20.00 to your account every 3 months to keep the account active. You pay per minute - I think it is something like 25 cents per minute for the first 5 and then 10 cents a minute after that - the website probably has this info. If you use up your $20.00 before the end of the 3 months, you'll get a message on the phone telling you to add more $$. If you don't use up the entire $20.00 in 3 months, the amount left will carry over, but you still have to add the $20.00. I have found that I don't always use the entire $20.00 in 3 months, but then some months if I am away from home a lot, I end up using up the extra minutes.

With Virign, you can buy "top up" cards to add $ to the phone, or you can register a credit card and just add $ from the phone itself or on the website.

Don't have Trac-fone, but DW has a prepaid phone. She barely uses it, so it works out a lot cheaper than a monthly plan.

We got it for my grandfather. It's nokia. Got it at kmart. He loves it. Brings it everywhere. He overloaded his minutes, so they expire in October. But he said that they will roll over with the new card he gets, he just has to buy some more units. We''ll deal with it then. He also gets GREAT reception. He can go on the boat in the middle of the ocean and get bars. Me, wtih tmoble...nothing.

Re: Trac fone-anyone have it?

DW actually DOES have a Trac-fone, even though I said she didn't....

I buy the yearly cards, so I don't have to "recharge" it every few months. This last time around, I was able to buy an additional year without minutes for $50 or so. Now I don't have to touch it for 2 years. She has just over 1000 minutes, which will still be too much for 2 years, but they keep having promotions for additional minutes, and when you buy X number of minutes, you often get 1.5X minutes, and we don't use the phone that often.

For DW, it's definitely worth it. Even for me, it probably would be, too.
